Jim Cutler, county commissioner, district 3: “When I stand in Ringgold Gap, I can feel and imagine the battle that took place here November 25, 1863, Gen. Patrick Cleburne leading 4,100 Confederate troops and withstanding the advance of Gen. Hooker’s Union troops of over 12,000 strong. This battle gave Gen. Bragg time to retreat and regroup his Confederate forces. Catoosa County is full of rich historical places. For me here at Ringgold Gap, this place matters.” (This is part of a continuing series called “This place matters,” in which public officials tell about a local site that holds meaning to them.)
