In light of the oil spill along the Gulf Coast, many establishments that deal with hair are participating in a cause to package freshly cut clean hair to facilities near the Gulf in an attempt to absorb and clean up the spill.

Puppy Love Kennel in Fort Oglethorpe has been onboard with the project for three weeks and plans on continu-ing the effort.

“We had heard about the project and definitely thought it was something we could help with,” said Jill Churches. “I’ve always been big into recycling and doing what I can to help the environment, so this was a cause I really wanted to be a part of.”

According to Churches, in a span of a little more than two weeks, Puppy Love has collected and shipped three bags of dog hair that was accumulated through grooming clients.

“It’s something that we’re going to continue to do from this point forward, because it’s going to take contribu-tions from all over the country to help with the problem,” Churches said.

Churches says she first heard of the effort via the website www.matteroftrust.org, which gives more in-depth in-formation about the project, as well as shipping addresses and contact information for those wishing to learn more about the endeavor.

The website indicates that one pound of clean human or pet hair will absorb 50 pounds of oil.

“It really is a great cause,” Churches said. “The trick now is to get hair salons, barber shops, and other dog grooming places on board as well.”
