According to the Lookout Mountain Police Department, 76-year-old Ruth Elizabeth Kennedy of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., was fatally struck by a car Saturday night while visiting a friend in Lookout Mountain, Ga.

Kennedy was getting ready to move her car at the friend's house on Rock City Trail when another friend backed a car into her. Kennedy died at the scene.

Alcohol was not a factor and no charges were filed.

Kennedy was born and raised in Mt. Vernon, N.Y., and was a graduate of The College of New Rochelle, N.Y. In her early 30s, she moved to Studio City, Calif. She spent her entire working career in the entertainment industry as executive assistant to several movie producers and directors. Her last 25 working years, she assisted Dan Curtis, a writer, director and producer of a number of movies and TV shows, the most notable of which was the Emmy-award winning “Winds of War/War of Remembrance”.

Shortly after her retirement, Kennedy moved to Lookout Mountain in early 1996. She dedicated her time and energy as a volunteer to a number of organizations, including the Ronald McDonald House, the Hunter Museum and the downtown public library. Kennedy was an active member of The Church of the Good Shepherd where she volunteered in the Book Store, the office and coordinated the church’s shuttle service.

Kennedy is survived by those whom she considered her family: friend Ethel Vreeland and her family Donna Vreeland and son Frank Jacobs, Warren (Barbara Ann) Vreeland and their children Heidi and Robbie, Joanne Vreeland Stabile and her children Nick and Alex (Mark) Stabile Williams and their daughter Samantha, and dear friend Patti Holmes.

A celebration of Kennedy’s life will be held Thursday, Dec. 20, at 2:30 p.m. at The Church of the Good Shepherd with the Rev. Dex Bender officiating. A reception will follow immediately after the services in the church’s Talbird Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to The Church of the Good Shepherd General Fund, the Kennedy Kennedy Scholarship fund for the benefit of the Good Shepherd School, or Friends of the Library, Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library, 1001 Broad St., Chattanooga, TN 37402.

Arrangements are by the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home and Crematory, Rossville.
