A Ringgold man wanted for a drive-by shooting Saturday, July 14, in Chickamauga shot and killed himself Sunday afternoon, July 15.

According to Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson, Harold Richard Land, 39, shot himself in Chester Frost County Park in Hamilton County on Sunday. According to Wilson, Land had been identified as the triggerman in a drive-by shooting at the Battlefield Plaza shopping center in Chickamauga on U.S. 27.

Police said family members found Land in the park. The family left to get officers, but when they returned, Land was dead.

Officials said Land drove through the parking lot by the center’s Taco Bell Saturday afternoon around 4:30 and fired seven shots with a .40-caliber automatic handgun.

Kathy Songer, 34, of Chickamauga was shot in the arm as she was walking down the sidewalk. Land fired five shots into the Movie Gallery but no one in the store was injured.

Songer, Land’s estranged girlfriend, was taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga after the bullet shattered part of her bone in her arm. Hospital officials didn’t comment on her status Monday afternoon.

“Land had been following Kathy and her mother around all day,” Wilson said.

Songer had filed a temporary protective order with Catoosa County the week of July 4.

“We receive on average of three domestic violence calls a day here in Walker County,” Wilson said. “This was the first one of this magnitude this year in the county.
