Rossville police on Monday arrested an alleged mail thief and forger, who has been out on bond on similar charges since August. Officer Tom Williams arrested Mary Ann Kirby at the Bi-Lo grocery store in Rossville after she attempted to cash a stolen check. Shortly after her arrest, a Bi-Lo employee found a grocery bag behind the store containing stolen mail, checks and mail addressed to Kirby. The checks totaled more than $105,000. Kirby, 42, is charged with first-degree forgery and theft of property. She was denied bond and is being held in the Walker County jail. Kirby, who was staying at a Jasper, Tenn., motel, faces up to 33 possible charges for forgery and mail theft, Williams said. The officer said he expects Kirby will be turned over to federal authorities. Kirby's 38-year-old brother, William Michael Cureton, was also arrested Monday but released from Walker jail on $1,000 bond. He resisted arrest and is charged with forgery and obstructing or hindering law enforcement officers.
