Catoosa County turns 150 years old on Friday. To pay tribute to this important milestone you’ll find the fruits of seven months of information gathering labor in today’s edition of The Catoosa County News.
“Catoosa County: Celebrating 150 Years” is a 100-page magazine collecting the major and lesser-known stories that form the fabric of the county’s history.
In those 150 years, Americans fought Americans on Catoosa soil, presidents and celebrities visited, exotic animals prowled the woods, and a sheriff’s choice of patrol car landed county law enforcement on television and in the pages of national magazines. Like our peers across the U.S. Catoosa residents sent their sons and daughters to defend our country in terrible conflicts in far-away places like Korea and Germany. We shared the horror when we saw those planes cutting through the World Trade Center on 9/11.
The newspaper’s staff worked diligently to compile the most factual, interesting stories and images from 150 years. You’ll find anecdotes from residents who remember a Catoosa County much different from the one of today, and you’ll get insights into how this sleepy little North Georgia county emerged into one of the fastest growing counties in Georgia — 53,000 residents and counting.
Careful consideration was given to include as many local resources as possible. Catoosa County’s heritage burns brightly through the tireless efforts of several individuals and organizations that lent a hand to our project.
Inevitably, an undertaking of this scope will contain some omissions. While each writer approached his or her time period differently, we feel the diversity mirrors the diversity of experiences that comprise Catoosa’s history. The staff of The Catoosa County News encourages readers to report any inaccuracies.
