Funding for one major project in Catoosa County was cut from the budget, State Sen. Jeff Mullis (R-Chickamauga) said. The governor chopped $100,000 Wednesday for planning and design of a satellite campus just off Battlefield Parkway for Dalton State College and Northwestern Technical College.

However, Mullis said $10,000 for the Patrick Cleburne statue at Ringgold Gap’s wayside park and $10,000 for a train-viewing platform in Ringgold remain in the budget.

State Sen. Don Thomas (R-Dalton) said the college project is just one of many items the governor cut. The governor also vetoed funding that would have gone toward the development of a new hotel at Dalton’s Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center, he said.

“I don’t think the vetoes have hurt us severely in the Northwest Georgia area,” Thomas said. “Of course, we’d have felt better if (the college campus money) had been included but I don’t think it means we can’t expect it to be in next year…”

Mullis said he’ll ask for more than just planning money next year for the college project.
