Catoosa authorities have arrested a Hixson, Tenn. man they believe is responsible for a string of area armed robberies.

Catoosa officers took Alphonso J. Smith, 21, into custody at the Fast Food, & Fuel at the corner of Cloud Springs Road and Hwy. 27 Friday morning where he was using a pay phone. Catoosa Sheriff Phil Summers said Smith has been charged with the armed robberies of Clifton Hills Dry Cleaners in Chattanooga Friday morning and the Kangaroo Service Station in Chattanooga Valley in Walker County March 21.

“He also faces drug charges, which were seized at the time of his arrest this morning,” Summers said Friday. “There is a strong possibility that Alphonso Smith will face armed robbery charges in Catoosa County for an armed robbery which occurred at Fast Food, & Fuel on Cloud Springs Road (March 29).”

Smith is also a suspect in an armed robbery in East Ridge March 28.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a red toboggan in the trunk that was used as a disguise during the robberies, Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson said. Also in the car were crack cocaine, marijuana and at least two handguns hidden under the hood in the engine compartment, Wilson said.

He is currently being held at the Catoosa Detention Center and no bond has been set as of Friday afternoon.
