Catoosa authorities said a corpse discovered Tuesday afternoon, March 11, off Mack Smith Road is the remains of a Chattanooga man missing since late January.

The body of Gary Dean Jones, 50, of Chattanooga, was discovered behind the Fort Oglethorpe city waste treatment plant about 4:30 p.m., Catoosa County Sheriff Phil Summers said.

Summers said the body was badly decomposed and was sent to the state crime lab in Atlanta for DNA testing and an autopsy.

“Mr. Jones has been reported missing since Jan. 28, after his vehicle — a Chevrolet Celebrity station wagon — was found on Mack Smith Road,” the sheriff said. “The cause of death is undetermined at this time.”

Earlier in the day, the body of an elderly man was discovered in a yard off Cloud Springs Road near Interstate 75.

Summers said the death appears to be from natural causes and is not connected to the continuing investigation of Jones’ death
