Annie Courtney, 77, LaFayette
Annie Jo Courtney of LaFayette died May 27, 2009. She was 77.
She was born May 24, 1932 in Chickamauga, the daughter of the late James Kyler and Margie Lee Purcell Lively. She was a retired secretary for the Department of the Army. She was a member of Fairview South Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by a son, Tommy D. Courtney, SGM (retired, U.S. Army); two brothers, James Louis Lively and Robert Clinton Lively; and a sister, Edna Lee Lively.
Survivors include her beloved husband, Robert D. "Mickey" Courtney, (retired, U. S. Army), to whom she was married for 57 years; son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Kim Courtney of Stephens City, Va.; sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Bill Elsberry of Summerville; daughter-in-law, Lily McHatton of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; grandchildren, Steven Courtney, Jonathan Courtney and wife, Eva Courtney, Michele and Jimmy Cribb, Jessica Rossi; great-grandchildren, Shelby, Katie, and Joshua Cribb, Alexandra and Samuel Courtney; nephews, Eddie Lively, Jason Dixson and Michael Bradley; and great-nieces, Kayla and Alyse Dixson.

Ruth Higdon, 81, Trenton
Ruth E. Higdon of Trenton died Thursday, May 28, 2009 at a local hospital, surrounded by her family. She was 81.
A native of Gunters Mountain, Ala., she spent the greater part of her life in the Higdon community of Sand Mountain, raising and tending to her most prized possessions, her family. She was devoted to her faith and family and spent many hours making the clothing for her children as they traveled the country singing as “The Gospel Singing Higdon Family.” She enjoyed arts, crafts, and teaching how to cook. She was a member of Fairview Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy A. Higdon; parents, Rev. W.B. and Flossie Guffey; daughter, Lanella Higdon; several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Sherwell and Gail Higdon of Pensacola, Fla., Joe and Pat Higdon of Higdon; daughters, Lavelda Floyd of Higdon, Marcellia Peppers of Pensacola; daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and Edgar Hawkins of Trenton, Tolitha and Bruce Bowden of Lookout Mountain; sister, Edith House of Douglasville; 15 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He worked at Barwick Mills and was an owner/operator with PBX Trucking. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Tompkins Lodge #466 F and AM.

Robert Lamar Ellington Sr. of Ringgold died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at a local hospital. He was 66.
He was a lifelong resident of North Georgia and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Berlin crisis. He was a member of New Haven Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Cora Ellington; sister, Betty Jo Grant.

Alice Schultz, 83, Ringgold
Alice “Squeaky” Schultz of Ringgold died Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at a local hospital. She was 83.
She lived most of her life in the Chattanooga and North Georgia area. She worked a variety of jobs in her lifetime that include being a photographer, Auxiliary Police and a seamstress. She worked at Red Food Store in Rivermont, and at Lionel Play World at Eastgate. Her passions in life were her family, quilting, gardening, cooking and cook booking.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel S. Schultz; parents, William and Willie Crane; and four brothers.
Survivors include her children, Constance S. (Ross) Jones of Tampa, Fla., Shirley S. Rye of Tampa, Ralph E. (Linda) Schultz of Ringgold; sisters, Mabel Nelson of Sacramento, Calif., Margie Hefner of Texas, Aurora Ross of Colorado, Gene Whitehead of Texas; brothers, William, Charles and Karl Crane, all of Texas; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

David Cutts, 71, Cairo, Tenn.
David L. Cutts of Cairo, Tenn., died May 25, 2009. He was 71.
A native of McMinnville, Tenn., he was preceded in death by parents, James Franklin and Mildred Nadine Fults Cutts; brothers, James Franklin Cutts Jr. and Freddie Lee Cutts.

Daniel Hudgens, 42, Rock Spring
Daniel Dorian Hudgens of Rock Spring died Tuesday, May 25, 2009. He was 42.
He was born in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., on April 7, 1967. He was a member of Peavine Baptist Church and was attending Noble Fellowship. He worked at Maxim Healthcare Services as an LPN in home health. He was a member of FFA, enjoyed working in his yard, playing the guitar, and cooking; but most of all, spending time with his family. He was a kind and loving man who used his death to be a blessing by donating his organs to help others.
He was preceded in death by his father, Demas Hudgens; sisters, Angela Gruber and Sheila Aken.
Survivors include his wife, Kim Nix Hudgens; mother, Reba Hudgens of Hollywood, Fla.; children, Ryan, Caleb and Emily Hudgens, all of Rock Spring; sisters, Debbie Sabet of California, Judy Hudgens of Florida, Joni Sims of Atlanta; special friends, Greg Madaris and Joel Gamarra Sr.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. A special angel, Shirley was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother.

Marie Capehart, 96, Harrison, Tenn.
Marie Murray Capehart of Harrison, Tenn., died Sunday, May 24, 2009. She was 96.
A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, she was a former employee of Standard Coosa Thatcher, and a member of Bayside Baptist Church. She was Past Worthy Matron of the Harrison Eastern Star and Past high Priestess of the Asbei Court #36 of Chattanooga, Tenn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom H. Capehart Sr.; and parents, Tom and Nora Nichols Murray.
Survivors include her two sons, Tom H. Capehart Jr. of Birchwood, Tenn., William E. Capehart of Marietta; four grandchildren, Travis Capehart of Soddy-Daisy, Tenn., Tommy Capehart of Birchwood, Tenn., Kristen Hart of Orlando, Fla., Stephen E. Glennis Faye Taylor Cline of Chickamauga died Sunday, May 24, 2009. She was 72.
She was born in Dekalb County, Ala., to the late Erby Lester and Nellie Addie Rowell Taylor. She was a homemaker and had previously worked at Crystal Springs Mill for more than 25 years in Chickamauga and Southern Metal Industries in Ringgold for 17 years. She was a graduate and a member of the Gordon Lee Alumni Association Class of 1955. She had attended Old Bethel Baptist Church in Chickamauga.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Farris Cline; and six sisters.

Harold Jackson Sartain of Rossville died Monday, May 25, 2009 at his residence. He was 65.
He was born in Tracey City, Tenn., to the late Ike and Gracie Mae Sartain. He worked as an industrial insulator and a heating and air installer until he was unable to work.
He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

James Burney, 65, Rock Spring
James Lewis “Jim” Burney of Rock Spring died Thursday, May 21, 2009. He was 65.
He was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., to the late Joseph L. and Maybelle Hickey Burney. He retired from Velsicol Chemical Co. of Chattanooga after 27 years of employment. He was a member of Chickamauga Church of Christ. He enjoyed being outdoors and was an avid golfer, and enjoyed fishing, turkey and deer hunting, archery and baseball. He also enjoyed games with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Alice Kay; and brothers, Carl, Joe and John Burney.

Winfred Allen Hale of Rossville died Saturday, May 23, 2009 at a local hospital. He was 81.
He served in the United States Navy and received an honorable discharge. He retired from Yellow Freight Systems. He was a member of Cloud Springs Baptist Church and was a previous member of Memorial Baptist Church. He taught Sunday school in previous years. He was the son of the late Matt and Nettie Ruth Hale. Daddy is now at home with the Lord, his Mom and Dad, and other family members. Our family would like to thank the caregivers, Brenda Hogan and Kathy Camp, and the many others who have stood by us, for all their love and care.
He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mable Coe; and brother, Leroy Hale.

Mary Greer Haubenreich of Flintstone and Matlacha, Fla., died Thursday, May 21, 2009 in Memphis, Tenn. She was 88.
She was a member of St. Elmo Church of Christ. She was a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and was retired from Walker County School System as a teacher at Chattanooga Valley High School. She was also a member of the Walker County Retired Teachers Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Edward Haubenreich Jr.; parents, John Ernest and Betty Sue Welch Greer; and a sister, Ernestine Vernon.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Bentley and her husband, Norman of Dunwoody and Susan Vaughn and her husband Gary of Memphis; one grandson, Tyson Stack of Germantown, Tenn.

Joseph Lynn Lacy of Ringgold died Sunday, May 24, 2009. He was 46.
He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and North Georgia areas and was a member of East Ridge Baptist Church. His passion in life was spending time with his two boys, either at the ballfields or band concerts, and also enjoyed taking them to the movies and out to eat. He was previously employed with Extreme Sports as sales supervisor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Faye Lacy; and his grandparents.
Survivors include his two sons, Joseph Aaron and Alexander Ray Lacy, both of Ringgold; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul Lacy Jr., of Kingsport, Tenn., Kevin and (Tammi) Lacy of Norcross, Jason and (Jennifer) Lacy of Chickamauga; the mother of his children, Jill Lacy of Ringgold; three nephews, two nieces and numerous friends.

Margaret Louise Parrish Paris of High Point died Wednesday, May 20, 2009. She was 81.
She was born July 2, 1927 to the late Henry Parrish and Martha Kutz Parrish in High Point. She was a district manager with World Book Encyclopedia for 20 years, a member of Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church, a member of the Young at Heart Ministry and a longtime Sunday school teacher. She loved cooking, crafts, travel, and her grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Arnold William Parish; sister, Jacquelyn Towe; brother, Emanuel and Kenneth Parrish.

Allene Beatrice Hale Underwood of LaFayette died Thursday, May 21, 2009 at her home. She was 98.
She was a member of LaFayette First Baptist Church. She served as Sunday school teacher and church choir member, and worked with WMU and Mission work with faithfulness for many years. She lived in LaFayette all her life, and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Margaret Hull, 88, Rossville
Margaret J. Hull of Rossville died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at a local hospital. She was 88.
She lived in Walker County most of her life, was a homemaker, and worked at the Peerless Woolen Mill. She was also a member of Elizabeth Terrace Baptist Church, where she was a longtime Sunday school and a member of the Ladies Prayer Band.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Millard “Pete” Hull; granddaughter, Amanda Thomas; brother, William T. Ashley; and sister, Alice Stone.

Philip Andrew Frady of Ringgold died Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at his residence after a long battle with cancer. He was 42.
He was a lifelong resident of the north Georgia area and was a well-known cabinet maker and homebuilder, having built his own home at the age of 25. He attended East Ridge Church of the Nazarene in his younger years.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Marlor and Cora Frady of Clayton, and John Parker and Stella Parker Napier of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Ruth Carter Cox of Fort Oglethorpe died Tuesday, May 19, 2009. She was 91.
She was born in Ooltewah, Tenn., to the late Henry Alfred and Clementine (Dill) Bettis. She was a member of LaFayette Church of the Nazarene. Special thanks to Hospice of Chattanooga, Memorial Hospital, and North Georgia Health Care for their loving care, and support during this difficult time.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Beth Gable. Ruth was a homemaker and was the happiest when surrounded by children and family. She loved gardening, fishing, mountain retreats, and was an avid animal lover.

Cam Garner of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Monday, May 18, 2009 at a local hospital. He was 90.
He was born in Franklin County, Tenn., but lived in Chattanooga, Tenn., most of his life. He worked as a welder, and was a supervisor at D.M. Stewart Co prior to his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and loved hunting and fishing.

George Nagle, Ph.D., 78, Chattanooga, Tenn.
George S. Nagle, Ph.D., of Chattanooga, Tenn., a local psychologist, died Monday, May 18, 2009 after a brief illness. He was 78.
He was born in Helena, Mont., and raised in San Francisco, Calif. He was the son of the late Estelle Walsh Nagle of San Francisco. He received his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Missouri, Columbia, and moved to Chattanooga in 1974 for the opening of the Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic. He proudly worked with the VA until he retired in November 2007. He was active in local, state and national psychological associations, and served as adjunct faculty for the Psychology Department of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Survivors include his loving wife, Margaret Nagle; daughter, Georgia Nagle of Atlanta; son, Eugene Nagle of Adairsville.

A native of Martins Ferry, Ohio, she lived in the Lakeview/Fort Oglethorpe areas for the past 50 years. She worked for GE Financial, retired from Lincoln National Life, and was past-president of the Dixieland Chapter of ABWA. She also served on the board of the Walker County Department of Family and Children Services. She loved her family, who will dearly miss her.
She was preceded in death by five brothers.

Tommy Friel, 72, Ringgold
Tommy Eugene Friel of Ringgold died Monday, May 18, 2009 after a short battle with cancer. He was 72.
He was born April 30, 1937 in South Pittsburg, Tenn., to the late Bill and Effie Friel and then moved to the Ringgold area at the age of 15. He lived in the North Georgia area for most of his life and was of the Baptist faith. He retired from Crawford Plumbing in 1999 and enjoyed NASCAR, collecting coins, and spending time with his family and friends.
He was also preceded in death by his infant son, William Lamar Friel; brothers, Frank and Don Friel; and sisters, Jere Ann Parham, Mattie Pearl Graham, Jeanette Keith and Christine Stanfield.

She retired from Western Union and was active in the Boynton Elementary PTA and the Ringgold High School PTA. She established Boynton’s original school patrol.

Helen Cook, 80, Rossville
Helen Louise Cook of Rossville died Saturday, May 16, 2009. She was 80.
She was born in Hahira on Nov. 2, 1928 and graduated from Hahira High School in 1944. As a longtime resident of Rossville, she retired from Southeast Federal Savings Bank in 1990 after 38 years of service. She was the first woman in the bank’s history to be named a vice president and was often referred to as the “First Lady” of Southeast Federal. For many years, she was active in the Eastern Star and the Rossville Business and Professional Women’s Club. She was a longtime member of the Rossville Church of Christ, active in her Sunday School class and with the Sonshiners group.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Harold Franklin Cook.
Survivors include her brother, Jack (Jeanette) Cain of Valdosta; daughter, Mary Linda Mason of Rossville; granddaughters, Amy M. (Jason) Butcher of Rossville, Lori M. He retired from Combustion Engineering as a supervisor after many years of service.

Barbara Maurine Ingram of Greensboro, N.C., died Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Beacon Place Hospice Home. She was 78.
She was born May 11, 1931 in Eldorado, Texas to John and Nina Smith Poton. In the early 1970s, she owned and operated a tax and bookkeeping business in LaFayette. After that, she became secretary at Shepherd Hills Nursing Home, also in LaFayette. She was a member of Morehead United Methodist Church, a member of Eastern Star and Masonic Order, a former Brownie Scout leader, a Matron in Jobe’s Daughters, was tri-founder of Ingram-Brown and Associates in 1979, and was co-founder and first secretary of Piedmont Emmaus Community.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Janis Marie Ingram.
Survivors include her husband, Robert H. Ingram of the home; one daughter, Stacy I. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Messer Larkin of Ringgold; eight children, Teresa (Wesley) Colbaugh, Cindy (Wayne) Hughes, Pam (Doug) Harris and Beth (Russell) Kinsey, all of Ringgold, Sandra (Jim) Baker of Kentucky, Sharon (Duane) Hart of Texas, Shiela (Craig) Sanderson of Arizona, and Georgia (Mike) Owens of Arizona; aunt, Carmie Collins of St. Simmons; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services: Sunday, May 17, at 3 p.m. at the chapel with Rev. Mark Smith and Rev. Jarrod Kinsey officiating. Burial: Anderson Cemetery. Visitation: Saturday, May 16, from 4-9 p.m., and Sunday, May 17, from 8 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Gladys Whiteside of LaFayette died Friday, May 15, 2009. She was 90.
She was a member of LaFayette First Baptist Church. She was retired as the administer of Shepherd Hills Health Care in 1986.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Matthew Whiteside; and son, William Whiteside.
Survivors include her daughters, Mary Stovall of Douglasville, Helen Tucker of LaFayette; son, Kenneth Whiteside of Talking Rock; sisters, Bessie Lusk of Tennessee, Sue Casey of Tennessee; seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services: Sunday, May 17, at 2 p.m. at the chapel with Dr. Todd Gaddis and Dr. Warren Moorehead officiating. Burial: West Hill Cemetery.
