Grace J. Luke, 81, Ringgold

Grace J. Luke of Ringgold died Thursday, November 29, 2012 in a local hospital. She was 81.

She was born in Sylvester to the late John C. Jolley, Sr. and Virginia Rycroft Jolley. She was retired from Genco Corporation with more than 20 years of service and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald W. Luke; brothers, Travis Jolley, J.C. Jolley Jr., and William C. Jolley; and sisters, Mildred Arnold and Mardarette Davis.

Survivors include her daughter, Gerald Lynn Luke of Ringgold; her son, Michael Wayne (Valerie) Luke of East Ridge; sister, Diane (Tommy) Raschke of Lakeland, Fla.; four grandsons and three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services: Saturday, Dec. 1, at 2:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Phillip Anderson officiating. Burial: Lakewood Memory Gardens, South. Visitation: Saturday, Dec. 1, from noon until the funeral hour at the funeral home.

Hazel Owens Zachry, 100, LaFayette

Hazel Owens Zachry of LaFayette died Tuesday, November 27, 2012. She was 100.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bethel O. Zachry; her son, Ray Zachry; and parents, L.R. and Rosa Lee Owens.

She was born on February 1, 1912, in Chattanooga, Tenn. She attended school at Livingston Academy in Livingston, Tenn., where she met and married her sweetheart, Bethel Zachry. She retired from Hamilton National Bank with 23 years of service. She was a member of St. Andrews Methodist Church, the Russell Tate Sunday School Class and Evangeline Chapter Order of Eastern Star. She will be remembered for her love for Christ, the church, family and friends.

Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Zachry Phillips and husband Jack, of LaFayette; sister, Delores (Don) Farmer of Cleveland, Tenn. She was a beloved grandmother to six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral service: Monday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. with pastor Randy Avans officiating. Burial: Chattanooga Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation: Sunday, Dec. 2, from 5-8 p.m. and on Monday from noon until service time.

Pallbearers: Edward Mitchell, Rodger Farley, Chris Mitchell, Rickie Foster, David Choate, and Chip Farley.

Charles Lee Crabtree, Sr., 82, Flintstone

Charles Lee “Charlie” Crabtree, Sr. of Flintstone died Monday, November 26, 2012, in a local hospice facility. He was 82.

A native and lifelong resident of Chattanooga Valley, he was the owner and operator of Crabtree Service Center in Flintstone for 50 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during the Korean Conflict, a charter member of the Chattanooga Valley Lions Club and of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charley and Florence Crabtree, brother, Gilbert Martin Crabtree, and sister, Helen Lovella Jones.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Renee Crabtree of Flintstone; grandchildren, Bethany and Lee Crabtree; step-children, Wanda Carter and Steve Boyd; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services: Friday, Nov. 30, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial: Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors. Visitation: Thursday, Nov. 29, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Willie E. Bryant, 78, Rossville

Willie E. Bryant of Rossville died Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at her residence. She was 78.

She was a wonderful, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was owner of Willie E. Bryant Bookkeeping and Tax Service in East Ridge, Tenn., for over 44 years. She was of the Baptist faith and loved gardening.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Parker T. and Myrtle Morris Williams; brother, Parker T. Williams Jr.; and sister, Frances W. Watson.

Survivors include her loving and devoted husband of 58 years, James R. Bryant; son, Timothy L. (Janice D.) Bryant of Chattanooga; daughter, Tina M. Bryant of Rossville; sisters, Oflian Williams of Fort Oglethorpe; grandchildren, Jason R. Gale Edward Stinnett, 67, Fort Oglethorpe

Gale Edward “Eddie” Stinnett of Fort Oglethorpe died from a sudden heart attack that called him home to his Lord, on November 28, 2012. He was 67.

Known for his sparkling smile, the twinkle in his eyes and the spring in his step, “Eddie” found his way into the hearts of all who met this 40-year resident of Fort Oglethorpe. He was an outstanding councilman serving the citizens of the City of Fort Oglethorpe, standing on the motto, “If it ain’t right, don’t do it.” Eddie was known for his outspokenness and bringing a “truth” voice to the people. His creative na-ture and abilities have been seen on the streets of Fort Ogle-thorpe with his original sign holders and garden art. He enjoyed people, talking to all who he encountered about Jesus and the love of the Lord. He served as a deacon at Fort Oglethorpe First Baptist where he was a member of the Fisher-man’s Sunday school, security team, personnel committee, and a door greeter known for helping elderly ladies and those in need.

When Eddie made a friend, he was a friend for life. Many knew and loved him as a hunting buddy, welder, councilman, fix-it man, volunteer, and general all round good guy ready to help anyone in need. As he did in his life, he will be helping others with his death by donating his organs to those in need.

He is preceded in death by parents, Hobert and Vada Stinnett; brother, Paul Stinnett; and in-laws, Burnest and Virginia Hays.

Survivors include his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 49 years, Louise Hays-Stinnett. Papa was the proud father of Paula and Eddie (Amy) Stinnett; grandchildren, Eden, Lexi and Wyatt; and a multitude of family members, Donald and Marie Hays, Glenda A. Duncan, David and Susan Stinnett; and numerous nieces and nephews who are feeling the loss of his happy voice and giving nature.

Herman M. Haygood, 71, Trion

Herman M. Haygood of Trion died Monday, November 26, 2012. He was 71. He was a member of Waterville Baptist Church, a former employee of the Hamilton County Board of Education and he enjoyed fishing and raising chickens. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Myra West Haygood; mother, Sarah Louise Voiles; son, Terry Wayne Haygood; brothers, James, Ronald and Clarence Haygood.

Survivors include his wife, Karan Haygood of Trion; son, Joey Wells of Cleveland; daughters, Brenda Wells of Irvington, Ky. and Diane Lancaster of Ider; two sisters, Rose Warren of Perry, and Mary Parks of Lafayette; brothers, Harold Haygood of Perry and Cecil Haygood of LaFayette; 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Doris Pickard Chandler, 78, LaFayette

Doris Pickard Chandler of LaFayette died unexpectedly at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 23, 2012, at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, surrounded by family and friends. She was 78. She was born on October 14, 1934 in the Corinth Community of Walker County, to Guy Wesley Pickard and Ruby Lee Scott Pickard. She was a 1953 Graduate of LaFayette High School and received an Associates Degree in Business from McKenzie Business College in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She was retired from the Walker County Department of Family and Children Services as a Caseworker Supervisor and Assistant to the Director. She was a dedicated member for more than fifty years of the LaFayette First Baptist Church. During those years, she was also actively involved in The Cheerful Doers Sunday School Class. She was a trusted and devoted friend who could always be counted on to help others in their time of need. She was also active in the LaFayette Crochet Club and regularly attended her neighborhood circle meetings. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Don Alton Chandler, and her younger brother, Ray Wesley Pickard.

Survivors include her son, Don Edward Chandler, daughter-in-law Elizabeth Way Chandler; son, Douglas Vincent Chandler, daughter-in-law Dyan Rayburn Chandler and granddaughters Lily Alton Chandler and Emma Scott Chandler all of Atlanta;. sister-in-law, Edith Shaver Pickard of Calhoun, and niece LaRae Pickard Furlong of Boise, Idaho; sister-in-law, Collette Chandler of Lilburn, and nieces Celeste Chandler of Dunwoody, and Carol Chandler Wood of Grayson; sister-in-law, Beatrice Chandler of Rock Spring; goddaughters, Marie Wallis Ivey and Pamela Wallis Chapman of Chattanooga, Tenn. She is also survived by several other nieces and nephews.

Billie Sandra Coppinger of Chickamauga passed away on November 19, 2012. She was 68.

Billie was a loving mother, daughter, and sister and will be missed by all that knew her. She retired from Wal-Mart after 10 years of service and was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Rossville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle Coppinger, father, William “Bill” Davis Kendrick, and granddaughter, Bridget Michelle “Micki” Moore.

Survivors include her children, Sandra Powell and Donna Holbrook, both of Ringgold, Patty Price of Chickamauga and Tommy Coppinger of Rossville; mother, Mary Ruth Barnes of Fort Oglethorpe; siblings, Patricia Howard and Leon Gooch, both of Rossville, and Judy Allison of Chickamauga; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Margot J. Outslay of Ringgold died on Monday, November 26, 2012, at her residence. She was 87.

She was born in Germany and had been a nurse in Midland Park School System in New Jersey. She was a member of Faith Reformed Church in Midland Park, N.J.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tunis A. Outslay.

Bill Jack Vaughn, 72, Chickamauga

Bill Jack Vaughn of Chickamauga passed away Saturday, November 24, 2012. He was 72.

He was born on December 20, 1939, in Grundy County, Tennessee, to the late Leonard and Nannie Belle Vaughn.

He lived in Alabama and North Georgia most of his life and was of the Baptist faith. He worked for Crystal Springs for several years, McMinnville Freight Lines and Milan Express as a truck driver where he was awarded the Million Mile Plaque Safety Award. He retired in 2003. He enjoyed his home, gardening, and helping his neighbors. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army.

He also was preceded in death by his three brothers, Levoy “Red” Lacy, David Vaughn and Doyle Vaughn; two sisters, Brenda Barrett and Louise Turner.

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Sara Ann Slater Vaughn; sister, Peggy (Sammy) Harmon, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Garry Freeman Strickland, 60, Chickamauga

Garry Freeman Strickland of Chickamauga departed this life on Saturday, November 24, 2012. He was 60.

He was born in LaFayette to the late Parks and Annie Strickland. He retired from Crystal Springs after 34 years of service there and later worked for Mt. Vernon Mills for 10 years. He was a member of Community Baptist Church.

He also was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Ann Strickland.

Ellen Ann Lewis Ringgold died on Thursday, November 22, 2012. She was 70.

She was the daughter of the late Luther and Marie Morrow. Ann was an avid gardener and attended Parkway Baptist Temple.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lewis and a son, Christopher Thomas Peppers.

Timothy C. Riggs of Ringgold died on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, in a local hospital.

He was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and North Georgia and was a member of Westside Baptist Church. He was a 1987 graduate of Tyner High School and a member of IBEW # 75.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hoyt A. Riggs.

Burl Byron Kell, 73, Ringgold

Burl Byron Kell of Ringgold departed this life on Monday, Nov. 19, 2012. He was 73.

He was born in Chickamauga to the late Lawrence Preston and Annie Lee Kell. He graduated from Jacksonville State University with his bachelors degree, and Middle Tennessee State University with his masters degree. He later retired from Whitfield County Board of Education as an administrator. He was a 50-plus-year member of the Masonic Lodge and member of Ringgold United Methodist Church.

He was also preceded in death by his siblings, James Earl Kell, Harold Kell, Charles Kell, and Vera Landers.

Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years, Carolyn Kell; children, Jeff (Kitty) Kell of Ringgold, Lawrence (Laura) Kell of Buford; sister, Cora Ann Parish of Chickamauga; grandchildren, Preston and Landon Kell, Tony and Chad Rylee; and several nieces and nephews.

Sylvia Jean Brown Locklear of Ringgold passed away Sunday, November 18, 2012. She was 67.

She was born to the late Russell and Sena Mae Brown in Chattanooga on March 17, 1945. She was of the Baptist faith and a former employee with Wal-Mart.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry Eugene Locklear, and son, William Russell Locklear.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Louis Arnold Fletcher of Hixon; sisters, Sandra McAllister of Ringgold and Alice Erwin of Chattanooga; and, several nieces and nephews.

Betty Charlotte Wallace Palmer, 65, Rossville

Betty Charlotte Wallace Palmer of Rossville went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, November 18, 2012. She was 65.

She was a lifelong resident of the north Georgia area and was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and loved her dogs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred “Bo” and Jane Wallace.

Survivors include her daughter, April Adams of Rossville; two sisters, Freddie Walden of East Ridge, Tenn., and Melva Shull of Red Bank, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Beth and Kristy Adams; one great-grandson, Hayden Vandergriff; and several nieces and nephews.

Linda Sue Smith, 63, Rossville

Linda Sue Smith of Rossville passed away on Friday, November 16, 2012, in a local hospital. She was 63.

She was a native and lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia area and was a graduate of Kirkman High School. Following high school, she began a career at Olan Mills where she worked for 34 years as a printer. The most joy in Linda’s life was being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Jesse Vaughn Coffman; daughters, Jennifer Little and April Smith; son, Steve Little; granddaughter, Zoe Boyd; brother, James Royal; and sisters, Opal Nelson and Helen Peaveyhouse.

Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Don Smith; children, Lisa Little and David Smith; grandchildren, Alishia, Tyler, Raven, Swavey, Noah, Chris, Donald, Jana, and Jennifer; and, great-grandchildren, Zaniah and Jayden.

Garry Allen Bailey, 69

Garry Allen Bailey, local artist and poet, passed away on Friday, November 16, 2012. He was 69.

He graduated from LaFayette High School and received his B.A. from the University of Georgia. For many years, he was owner of Bailey & Associates in Chattanooga, and Signs of the South in Chickamauga. His work as a freelance artist consumed his time which he never grew tired of doing.

He was preceded in death by this parents, Woodrow Wilson Bailey and Faye Daphene Bailey, and brother, Roger Dale Bailey.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Trenton Bailey of Ringgold, Harper Green of Roanoke, Va., and Whitney Lee Foster; brother, Woodrow “Gene” Bailey of LaFayette; sister, Nancy Dean, of LaFayette; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

James Anthony Ervin of LaFayette died on Saturday, November 17, 2012. He was 61.

He was preceded in death by his father, Chub Ervin, Jr., mother, Bonnie Ruth Hathorne, sisters, Teresa Ervin and Elizabeth Ervin, and brother, Steven Ervin.

He was survived by his son, Eric, and wife, Rebecca Fink of LaFayette; sister, Carolyn Ervin of LaFayette; brothers, Orville Hathorne of Summerville, Timmy and wife Fran Ervin of Smithville, Tenn.; grandson, Coby Fink; niece, Amanda Ervin; nephews, Gage Ervin and Bryan Ervin; great nieces, Elexis and Cloey; great nephews, Cameron, Haiden, and Jayden also survive.

Danny Ray Wallin of LaFayette died on Tuesday, Novem-ber 13, 2012. He was 57.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Nancy Carolyn Gore Wallin, and brother, Kenneth Wallin.

He was survived by his father, Paul Wallin; daughter, Renee Mathews; sons, Jesse Wallin, and Chris Anderson; and sister, Suzanne Stewart, all of LaFayette; brothers, Jerry Don Wallin of Fort Oglethorpe, and Bruce Wallin, of Trion; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Helen Lovella Jones, 84, Rossville

Helen Lovella Jones of Rossville passed away on Friday, November 16, 2012, in a local hospital. She was 84.

A native and lifelong resident of the north Georgia area, She was a member of Lookout Baptist Church and was retired from Bell South following 41 years of service. She also was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. While she enjoyed knitting and quilting in her spare time, her greatest love was animals. She put her trust and faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and passed that on to her loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Luther Crabtree and Florence Lucinda Chapman Crabtree, and a brother, Gilbert Crabtree.

Survivors include her daughters, Diane Jones of Rossville, and Deborah (Robert) Owens of East Ridge, Tenn.; brother, Charlie Crabtree of Flintstone; grandchildren, Cody Hamilton and Amber Turnipseed; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Pearl Walker, 89, Chattanooga

Dorothy Pearl Walker of Chattanooga went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, November 16, 2012. She was 89.

She was born in Long Island, Alabama, to the late Jesse and Edith Whaley, but had lived in the Chattanooga area for most of her life. She was a member of Grace Nazarene Church in Chattanooga, and was active with the Cub Scouts as a den mother for many years. She also enjoyed cooking and reading and was a devoted sister, wife and mother who will be greatly missed by all that knew her.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Claud Walker, infant son, Gary Martin Walker, and sister, Anne Meadows.

Survivors include her son, Michael Stephan Walker; sister, Jessie P. Whaley, both of Chattanooga, Tenn.; three nephews, Jack, Bill and Phil Meadows; and several great nieces and nephews.

Robert “Bobby” Anthony Smith, Sr., 68, Ring-gold

Robert “Bobby” Anthony Smith, Sr., of Ringgold departed this life on Thursday, November 15, 2012, at his home. He was 68.

He was born in Norfolk, Virginia, to the late Garnett and Ruth Smith, and alter retired from Southern Metal Industry after more than 25 years of service there.

Survivors include his loving wife of 40 years, Marie Smith; children, Anthony Smith and Julie Smith; brother, William (Gaye) Smith, Jr., all of Ringgold; sister, Joy (Tim) Stone of California; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Saturday, Nov. 17, from 4-8 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 18, from 4-8 p.m., and prior to the service, Monday, Nov. 19, at the funeral home. Funeral: Monday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Scott Grizzle officiating. Burial: Anderson Memorial Gardens.

Robert Howard “Bob” McCoy, 84, Rossville

Robert Howard “Bob” McCoy died Monday, November 19, 2012, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was 84.

He was born December 31, 1927, to the late John L. and Faye Shirley McCoy.

Bob McCoy grew up in Tiftonia and excelled in sports in high school and college. He graduated from Central High School in 1947, where he played five sports and earned 11 varsity letters. In football he was All-City, All-State and All Southern and held the prep scoring record for over 20 years with 250 points. He was nicknamed the “Wauhatchee Express’’ by former Chattanooga Times-Free Press Sports Writer, Dexter Van Zant. He also was part of a State Championship Football Team while at Central.

After graduating from Central High School, he attended Georgia Tech where he continued excelling in football and baseball earning eight varsity letters. He was captain of the baseball team and played both offense and defense in football earning All-SEC honors. He is among the leaders in pass interceptions and held the record for the longest touchdown from scrimmage (87 yards) for 60 years at Georgia Tech. He played in the Orange Bowl on the 1948 team that defeated Kansas. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams football team and St. Louis Cardinals baseball team after finishing college.

He often said how honored he was to play for Coach E. B. Etter and Coach Bobby Dodd for not only were they great coaches but also great men.

Bobby McCoy was inducted in the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame and was recognized as a Distinguished Alumni of Central High School. He was a member of the Greater Chat-tanooga Half Century Club.

After finishing at Tech, he moved to Rossville where he was employed by Peerless Woolen Mills. He was an outstanding fast pitch softball player for the Peerless Woolens and was a popular coach in the recreation program for many years. After the mill closed, he worked in management at Chattanooga Glass Company where he retired.

Bob McCoy served as Rossville City Councilman, Rossville City Judge, and Georgia State Representative. He served as President with the Rossville Kiwanis Club, President of the Rossville Jaycees, a member of the Rossville Masonic Lodge #397 F&AM, Director Emeritus Rossville Bank formerly Community National Bank, also serves on the board of Walker Technical College (Georgia Northwestern), and the Board of Hutcheson Medical Center. He was a charter member and President of Battlefield Golf Club and a charter member of Peerless Plungers Investment Club. He was a member of Simpson United Methodist Church for over 60 years where he was very active in the Outreach Sunday School Class and served in many leadership positions within the church throughout those years.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold McCoy and Fred McCoy.

Survivors are his wife of 63 years, Jean McCoy; children, Dr. Michael McCoy, Chattanooga, and Susan (David) Wells, Rossville; precious granddaughters, Dr. Katie Wells, Colum-bus, Ohio, and Elizabeth Wells, Chattanooga; sister-in-law, Anne McCoy, Ringgold; niece, Jeannie (Al) Schay, Little Rock, Arkansas; and several cousins.

Visitation: Friday, Nov. 23, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., and one hour prior to the service on Saturday, Nov. 24, at the fu-neral home. Funeral: Saturday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m., in the fu-neral home chapel with Revs. Janice Keebler and David Harr officiating. Burial: Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Simpson United Methodist Church Outreach Class and his golfing buddies, Bennie Dendy, John Llewellyn and Fred Prater.

Teagan Nathaniel Millard, infant son of Ricky and Keesha Millard, passed away peacefully in the arms of his loving parents on Thursday, November 15, 2012, and woke up in the arms of Jesus.

Teagan was born on Thursday, November 8, 2012, and during his seven short days here on earth he touched many lives and was loved deeply by family and friends.

Carl Miller Cofer, 86, Ringgold

Carl Miller Cofer of Ringgold passed away Friday, November 16, 2012. He was 86.

A native of Georgetown, Tennessee, he lived in the Ringgold area for the past 74 years. He was a former employee of Greased Lightning, a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served on the USS Bogue, and was a member of Ringgold First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lucille Shamlin Landen, and father, French Cofer.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mildred Jay Cofer of Ringgold; daughter, Donna (Eddie) Bomar of Ringgold; sister, Jean Green of Ringgold; two grandsons, Tyson (Mary) Bomar and Kelly (Jamie) Bomar; two great-grandchildren, Devan and Cooper Bomar; three step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Saturday, Nov. 17, from 3-9 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 18, until 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral: Sunday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m., at Ringgold First Baptist Church with Drs. Dan Whitaker and Bruce Sloan officiating. Burial: Anderson Cemetery.
