Glynn Michael Harris, 57, Ringgold

Glynn Michael Harris of Ringgold died Tuesday, July 24, 2012. He was 57.

He had lived in the north Georgia area for most of his life and was of the Christian faith. He was previously employed with Victory Signs and enjoyed playing the guitar. He was also a cave rescue expert, loved animals and was very mechanically inclined. He was a loving and devoted father who will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine Harris.

Survivors include his father, Glynn Harris and step-mother, Ruth H. Harris of Chattanooga, Tenn.; daughter, Jade Harris of Spring Hill, Fla.; dear friend and mother of his child, Felicia Maney; brother and sister-in-law, Patrick C. And Suzanne Harris of Ringgold; and his two companions, Zeet and Emma.

Funeral services will be private and there will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Deborah Jean Blevins, 57, Chattanooga, Tenn.

Deborah Jean Blevins of Chattanooga died Thursday, July 26, 2012, at her residence. She was 57.

She was born and spent many years in Ypsilanti, Mich., before moving to Chattanooga. She attended Hillcrest Baptist Church and had worked for Armando’s on Main Street and Arcade Printing. She had a passion for her dogs, gardening and being with her friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lenora Elendor Blevins; her brother, Thomas Harold Blevins, Jr.; and sister, Catherine Renee Blevins-Gaddis.

Survivors include her son, Dustin Gabriel Ellis; grandsons, Peyton and D.J.; father, Thomas Harold Blevins; sisters, Brenda Blevins and Becky Carter; brother, Bobby Blevins; several nieces and nephews.

Memorial service: Tuesday, July 31, at 1 p.m., in the funeral home chapel. Visitation: Tuesday, July 31, from noon until the service hour at the funeral home.

Mary Gray Rockholt, 87, Fort Oglethorpe

Mary Gray Rockholt of Fort Oglethorpe died Friday, July 27, 2012. She was 87.

She had lived in the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas for most of her life and was a member of Spring Creek Road Baptist Church. She was very active with her Sunday school class and served as the treasurer for many years and was previously employed with Loveman’s for more than 30 years. She was also a member of the Red Hatters Club and was a loving and devoted mother, wife and grandmother who will be greatly missed by all that knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nathan and Louise Bryant; first husband, Charles Gray; second husband, Walter Rockholt, and brothers, Hobert Johnson, Homer Johnson, Jim McClure, Bill Bryant and John Bryant.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Charles McRae of LaFayette; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Elsie Bryant of Kentucky; two granddaughters, Crystal and Joey Hale and Tara McRae; three great-grandchildren, Destiny McRae, Emma Melton and Alyssa Melton; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services Monday, July 30, at 1 p.m., in the funeral home chapel. Burial: Lakewood South Memory Gardens. Visitation: Sunday, July 29, after 4 p.m., and prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Robert Lamar McGill, 80, Menlo

Mr. Robert Lamar McGill of Menlo died Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at Redmond Regional Medical Center. He was 80.

He was born June 18, 1932, in Wildwood, the son of the late Robert McGill and Janie Moore McGill. He was retired from Combustion Engineers. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church. He was a loving husband and father. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Korean War.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roger Byrd McGill.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Amos McGill; daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Billy Sumrall; son, Robert L. McGill, III; sister, Geneva Busby; grandchildren, Harley Sumrall, Jordan Sumrall, and Megan Walker.

Funeral services: Saturday, July 28, at 3 p.m., in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jimmy Wilborn officiating. Burial: LaFayette City Cemetery. Visitation: Friday, July 27. from 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be nephews.

Linda Gail Bearden, 59

Ms. Linda Gail Bearden died Friday, July 27, 2012, at Hospice of Chattanooga in Chattanooga, Tenn. She was 59.

She was born February 2, 1953, in Fort Oglethorpe, daughter of the late Beulah Gravitt and Noah Cureton.

Survivors include her sons, Teddy Dewayne Gilreath, Gregory Michael Carter, and Mitchell Aaron Carter; brothers, Amos Cureton and Noah Cureton; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services: Monday, July 30, at noon at Rock Spring Cemetery with Rev. Mickey Skates officiating. Burial: Rock Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers will be T. J. Gilreath, Chad Hewitt, David Turnipseed, Tracy Skates, Josh Skates, and James Parker.

David Luther Davenport, 52, Fort Oglethorpe

David Luther Davenport of Fort Oglethorpe died Friday, July 27, 2012, in a local hospital. He was 52.

He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga, north Georgia area and of the Baptist faith. He co-owned/operated T.H.E. Road Service with wife, Daisy, for 25 years. For the last seven years he worked for the city of Fort Oglethorpe. He enjoyed fishing, playing banjo, bluegrass music, family, racing, and shooting at the range in his free time.

He was preceded in death by parents Katherine Jewell Davenport and Donald Davenport.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Daisy Davenport; sons, Wes Howard and Beth Lyles of Fort Oglethorpe, Michael Howard of Rossville; daughter, Angela and Ricky McDaniel, of Fort Oglethorpe; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Lewis Milton Bolt, 87, Chickamauga

Lewis Milton Bolt of Chickamauga died Friday, July 27, 2012. He was 87.

He was born in Chickamauga to the late William and Arizona Bolt. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and later retired from Combustion after 42 years of service. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Frances Bolt and nine siblings.

Survivors include his children, David (Jodi) Bolt of Chickamauga, Linda Feigl of Rossville; siblings, Frank Bolt of Sun City, Ariz., Ruth Hubbs of East Ridge, Doris Spruill of Chickamauga; grandchildren, Joshua and Jacob Feigl, Julie Squires; great-granddaughters, Ellie, Ava, and Mia; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services: Tuesday, July 31, at 11:30 a.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery. Visitation: Monday, July 30, from 5-8 p.m.

Anna Mae Farrow Stewart, 61, Signal Mountain

Anna Mae Farrow Stewart of Signal Mountain died Saturday, July 28, 2012. She was 61.

She had lived in the Ringgold area for most of her life but was a current resident of the Signal Mountain area and was of the Baptist faith. She was surrounded by her loved ones and exited this Earth on her own terms, albeit much too soon. Her life was spent bringing three beautiful children into this world, educating children at the local middle school and eventually running her own business with her two surviving children. She loved to travel and was blessed to spend time doing so with one or both of her children. Her legacy will continue on as one of love, faith and perseverance. Those who knew her will know that of her and move those vaules forward in their own lives. She was a loving and devoted mother who will be forever missed and never forgotten by all that knew her.

She has left this world to be reunited with her parents, Willard and Audrene Farrow; daughter, Michelle Stewart; grandparents, Beulah and Wallace Vandiver, Sr.; and her irreplaceable pup, Sunshine.

Survivors include her two children, Michael Stewart and Anna Nichole Stewart, both of Signal Mountain, Tenn.

Graveside services: Thursday, August 2, at 11 a.m., in the Anderson Memorial Gardens with Bro. Danny Henson officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Myrtle Elaine Ferguson Whittemore, 81, Ringgold

Myrtle Elaine Ferguson Whittemore of Ringgold died Sunday July 29, 2012. She was 81.

A native of Young Harris, Myrtle has lived in the Ringgold area for most of her life. She was a former employee of Shaw Industries where she worked for over 20 years and was of the Baptist faith.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Felton Whittemore; parents, Allen and Lena Shook Ferguson; son, Danny Ray Whittemore; sister, Clara Bell Ferguson; and three brothers, Dwight, Ralph and O.D. Ferguson.

Survivors include four children, Linda K. Green, Rosa Lee Bishop, Stanley (Anita) Whittemore, and Ronnie Whittemore, all of Ringgold; daughter-in-law, Mary Whittemore of Ringgold; two sisters, Mae Studdard of Chickamauga, and Marie McCray of Hayesville, N.C.; twelve grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Russell Walter Higdon of Rossville died Sunday, July 29, 2012. He was 76.

He was born on Lookout Mountain and has been a lifelong resident of northwest Georgia. He worked at Tarver’s Exxon Station for over twenty-five years as a mechanic. He was a member of Lookout Mountain Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Russell W. Higdon, Sr.; sister, Judy Curtis; brothers, Marvin and Stanley Higdon.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-six years, Lexie Castle Higdon of Rossville; mother, Lillian Idell McDonald Higdon of LaFayette; daughters, Nancy Ann Roberts of Ringgold, and Rosalie Higdon of Rossville; son, Joseph Higdon of Lookout Mountain; grandchildren, Katie Barnes, Holly Dowis; great-grandchildren, Briar Barnes, Jacob Dowis; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ruby Lanier Richardson of LaFayette died Saturday July 27, 2012, at her home. She was 92.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Mathew and Elizabeth Mitchell Lanier; her husbands, Willard F. Thompson and Thomas Arnold Richardson.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Willene and Mike Gladu, of Anchorage, Alaska; sons, Larry Thompson, of Summerville, and Randy Thompson, of Blue Ridge; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Charles M. Snyder of LaFayette died Saturday, July 21, 2012. He was 58.

Johnine Flo Young Byrd, Ringgold

Johnine Flo Young Byrd of Ringgold died on Saturday, July 21, 2012, at Erlanger Hospital. She was surrounded by her family as she departed this earthly life for her eternal home in heaven.

Johnine, or simply Mommaw as she was called by many, lived an abundant life of 82 years and loved serving others She graduated as the valedictorian of the Class of 1947 from Ringgold High School and Edmondson Business College. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Lydia Sunday school class, and WMU. She was a church secretary for 25 years while they lived in different states when Donald served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Since their retirement she has enjoyed being involved with Habitat for Humanity and the Fashion Shows, Constructors for Christ, Ringgold Chapter #245 Order of Eastern Star, and volunteering in the office at Ringgold First Baptist Church.

She was the youngest daughter of John and Charity Young. She was preceded in death by brothers, Edgar, Summerfield, Ernest, Roy, James and Harold; and sisters, Viola, Louise Young and Alice Huskey; and son, Donald, Jr.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Byrd (she and he just celebrated 60 years of marriage on July 1, 2012); daughter, Kathi (Robert) Nease; grandson, Heath Williams; granddaughter, Kristin (Randy) Overton; great-granddaughter, Natalie Overton; step-granddaughter, Erin Nease; step-great-grandsons, Matthew and Daniel Overton; sister-in-law, Frances Young; many nieces and nephews.

Garland Ray Sexton, 76, Rossville

Garland Ray Sexton of Rossville died Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at his residence. He was 76.

He was a native of Sevier County, Tenn., and a graduate of Harrison-Chilhowee Academy. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army and a lifetime member of the American Legion in Fort Oglethorpe. He was the owner of Ray Sexton Trucking of Rossville and he took pride in preparing the ground for many local businesses and public areas. He was an avid fan of UT Football.

He was preceded in death by his daughters, Vicki Gifford and Michelle Murr; parents, Ben and Vena Sexton; brother, Hubert Sexton; and sister, Barbara Lee.

She had lived most of her life in the Chattanooga and north Georgia area where she retired from Roper in 2002 with 10 years of service. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Terri Lynn Preston; parents, John and Mary Armstrong; and brother, Richard Armstrong.

Survivors include her son, Mickey Preston; two brothers, Jack Armstrong and James M. Armstrong; sister, Linda Rickett; and several nieces and nephews.

Barbara Christian Potts Cobble of Ringgold died Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at her residence. She was 77.

She was the daughter of the late Roy and Clara Christian. She was a member of Rock Spring United Methodist Church. She was member of the Good Sam’s Club, an avid Braves fan, very competitive in life, loved to travel and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, J. Robert Potts and James (Jake) Cobble; siblings, R.W. Christian, Jr., Ross Christian, Lamar Christian, Don Christian, Earl Christian, Franklin Christian and Freida Buchanan.

Survivors include her children, Deborah (Jerry) Moore, of Ringgold, Renee (Kelly) Hill, of Ringgold, Randy (Cynthia) Potts, of Dalton, and Rodney (Shelly) Potts, of Jasper, Tenn.; grandchildren, Josh Moore, Jessica Potts, Abby Hill, Justin Potts, Brandon Potts, Noah Hill and Brett Potts; great-grandson, Mason Dougherty; siblings, Evie Steinmann, Connie Bird, Herbert Christian, Mae Vielhauer, John Christian, Helen Stephenson and Harold Christian.

Charlotte Vann Hollis, 75, Rossville

Charlotte Vann Hollis of Rossville died Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at her residence. She was 75.

She was a lifelong resident of Rossville and 1955 graduate of Rossville High School. She was affectionately known as Pickle. Her professional career was spent at Combustion Engineering and Kayo Oil Company where she was the first female on the Board of Directors, which later became Conoco Oil where she was manager of employee relations. She was active in ESA, a national philanthropic and educational organization. As a member of the Alpha Beta Chapter, she served all offices of the local chapter and served as Tennessee State president in 1976-1977. Her family was her passion and cooking was her hobby. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eston and Mary Ellen Blevins Vann; and brother, Donny Vann.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Hollis; sons, Shawn (Janine) Hollis, of Athens, Ala., Matthew (Maddie) Hollis; brothers Toppy (Gail) Vann, of Greensboro, J. T. Deborah June Clark Lay died July 18, 2012.

Thomas “Skip” Lebron Skipper of Rossville died Friday, July 20, 2012. He was 63.

He was a lifelong resident of the north Georgia area and was a member of Calvary Memorial Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran having served during the Vietnam War and enjoyed traveling and antiquing. He retired from the Electric Power Board after more than 22 years and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by all that knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rob and Lorena Skipper and sister, Bobbie Bernice Skipper.

Fred Hooper, 78, Tunnel Hill

Fred Hooper of Tunnel Hill, died Sunday, July 22, 2012. He was 78.

He was born in Towns County to the late Oscar and Bertha Hooper. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and later retired from Sweetwater Carpet after 36 years of service with them. He was better known as an avid bee keeper and was a member of the Bee Keepers Association and a member of Pine Hill Baptist Church in Tunnel Hill.

He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Oda Lee Gibson, Leona Massingale, Anna Bell Deason, Carmie Nichols, and his twin brother, Frank Hooper.

Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Ann Hooper of Tunnel Hill; children, Vicki (Van) Goins of Rock Spring, Duane Hooper of Tunnel Hill, Jeanne (Ronnie) Wright, Duanah Eaves Leigh (Jack), Trena (Ray) Jones all of Ringgold; siblings, Melvin Hooper, Dewey Hooper both of Tunnel Hill, Evaline Hobbs of Sugar Valley; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Mary C. Smith of Ringgold died peacefully Sunday July 22, 2012, surrounded by her loving family in NHC in Fort Oglethorpe. She was 93. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Wright Smith; son, Jimmy Lee Smith; and daughter Martha Ann Johnson.

William “Bill” Harvey Keown of Rossville, a longtime Catoosa County resident, died July 20, 2012. He was 93.

He was born in Walker County on December 17, 1918, to the late Ben and Nora Keown. He had a varied career, having spent most of his professional life as a business owner and manager in Alabama. He also worked in the Lumber Industry in Northern California and Georgia following a period of military service with the U.S. Marine Corp prior to WW II. His primary non-professional interests were reading, history, machinery and woodworking. He was an active member of East Ridge Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and member of the chapel class. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ralph, Charles and Ben Keown, Jr.

Tonnie Jarrett Hickey, 66, East Ridge

Tonnie Jarrett Hickey a resident of East Ridge and beloved mother of Dawn Hickey Zielke and Lori Hickey Ezell, passed away July 11, 2012, of pancreatic cancer. She was 66.

She will be greatly missed as she led a varied life from IBM in the early years to Honor System Snack sales and from East Ridge city taxi cab driver to a Hamilton County Child Support Court Clerk a position from which she recently retired due to illness. She worked for almost 50 years and met many people whether through work, church, social gatherings, or just plain shopping trips, she made an impact. She was the living embodiment of love and will be remembered by all in that way; animal and human alike. Her quick wit, love of the Lady Vols with the compliment of Pat Summitt and her desire to leave the world a better place were but a small part of her trademark charm.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Martha Gallaher-Steele and Jerry Jarrett and step-grandchild, Drew Ezell. A native of Meigs County, Tenn., she moved to Chattanooga as an adult after graduating from Meigs County High School and McKenzie College.

Other survivors include her son-in-law Mark Zielke; former husband, Donald Lee Hickey; step-grandchild, Kaitlyn Ezell; step-great-grandchildren, Kameron Ezell and Karlee Henderson and special friend Iva Combs Hickey.

A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga, north Georgia area, she was a former employee of MTS and was of the Baptist faith. She is preceded in death by her son, James Robert Rood.

Survivors include her husband, Sean Eugene Rood of Rossville; mother, Bonnie Bowling of Ringgold; father, Harold S. LaFerry Sr. of Ringgold; two sons, Sean Dylan Rood and Sean Michael Rood both of Rossville; brother and sister-in-law, H. Steven and Tammy LaFerry of Cleveland, Tenn.; grandmother, Betty Jo Bowling of Ringgold; mother-in-law, Victoria Lynn Bailey of Rossville; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

Funeral services: Tuesday, July 17, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Billy Dean officiating. Burial: Lakewood Memory Gardens-South. Visitation: Monday, July 16, from 4-9 p.m. and Tuesday until funeral time at the funeral home.

Anna Lee Madaris, 90, Chickamauga

Anna Lee Madaris of Chickamauga died Friday, July 13, 2012. She was 90.

She was born in LaFayette to the late George Washington and Mary Annie Lentz. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Mathada Chapter #190 and Chattanooga Valley Presbyterian Church in Flintstone. She was also preceded in death by her husband, W. Aubrey Madaris; great-grandson, Conner Volz; and nine siblings.

Survivors include her daughters, Judith (Tom) Owens of Chickamauga, Wanda Lowe of Lake Wylie, S.C., Audrey (Maynard) Ferry of Madisonville, Tenn., and Deborah Deaton of Chickamauga; eight grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service: Tuesday, July 17, at 12:30 p.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Dr. Dan Gilchrist officiating. Visitation: Monday, July 16, from 5-8 p.m. and prior to the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hutcheson Hospice and/or Chattanooga Valley Presbyterian Church Building Fund.

Michael Earl Smith, 53, Ringgold

Michael Earl Smith of Ringgold died Monday July 16, 2012. He was 53.

A resident of the north Georgia/Chattanooga area for the past five years, he was formerly of Dahlonega. He was a former employee of The Tinken Company and was a member of Woodstation United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his parents, J. Lindsey and Esther Dunn of Ringgold; son, Bobby Earl Smith of Ringgold; two daughters, Nichole (Ben) Sutton of Manchester, Tenn., and Whitney Smith of Dawsonville; two sisters, Renee (Greg) Spann of Cave City, Ky., and Cindy (Steve) Myers of Athens; many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorial service: Friday, July 20, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Visitation: Friday, July 20, from noon-2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Annie Quinn, 95, Rossville

Annie Quinn of Rossville died Monday, July 16, 2012, at her residence. She was 95.

She was born April 11, 1917, in Knoxville, Tenn., to the late Andrew and Estella Skelf. She was a lifelong member of the First Church of the Nazarene and the Sallie Dickson Sunday School class, which she served in many positions. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Miles Thomas Quinn.

Survivors include her son, Dr. James (Patsy) Quinn; daughter, Barbara Quinn (Don) Garrett; grandchildren, Robb Garrett, of Phoenix, Ariz., Donna Quinn Andrews, of Knoxville, Tenn., Deborah Quinn Christensen, of Montgomery, Ala., Michael Quinn, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Laurie Quinn, of Loewenberg, Tampa, Fla.; five great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; brother, Kenneth Skelf, of Rossville; sister, Sue Adams, of Rossville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services: Thursday, July 19, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Revs. Eric Johnson and John Andrus officiating. Burial: Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation: Wednesday, July 18, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
