COMMUNITY · Thursday, March 22, at 6:30 p.m., the Friends of Chickamauga Public Library will hold a brief in-formational meeting followed by guest speaker Mark Mariakis. Mr. Mariakis is the head football coach at Ridgeland High School. Coach Mariakis was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma (benign brain tumor) in 2008. Come hear his inspirational and humorous story of strength and courage. Light refreshments will be served.

COMMUNITY · Camp New Dawn will hold a spaghetti supper fundraiser Friday, March 23, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Second Baptist Church gym in LaFayette. Money raised will go to summer camp scholarships. Dinner includes spa-ghetti, bread, vegetable, and dessert. All meals will be packed for takeout, but there will be tables set up if you would like to eat there. All meals are $7. COMMUNITY · Georgia’s turkey hunting season begins March 24. With a bag limit of three gobblers per season, hunters have from March 24 through May 15 to harvest their birds. A WMA license is required for any person 16 years or older who does not possess a valid honorary, sportsman or lifetime license when hunting wild turkey on a WMA or Public Fishing Area. In addition, a valid hunting license and a big game license are required to legally hunt wild turkey. Legal firearms and archery equipment for hunting wild turkey are shotguns, loaded with No. 2 or smaller shot, any muzzleloading firearm, longbow, crossbow or compound bow. ENTERTAINMENT · There will be a county-wide art show, “Artrageous Antics,” March 24 featuring work from Walker County and Chickamauga City Schools. Free to the public. Drop in from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Walker County Schools’ Advancing Education Center at 925 Osburn Road in Chickamauga. There will be rooms full of art in various media and genres, artist demonstrations, musical performances and craft activities for all ages. ENTERTAINMENT · The Mid South Concert Band, a community band made up of 50-60 area musicians, will per-form a spring concert Saturday, March 24, at 2 p.m. at the Catoosa County Center for the Performing Arts at Heritage High School in Ringgold. The band, under the direction of Jim Souders and Ron Starnes, will perform a “pops” program that will include selections from movie musicals such as Mary Poppins, Broadway show tunes and big band medleys featuring the music of Duke Ellington and Frank Sinatra. The public is invited; admission is free.
COMMUNITY · Reita and Elbert Cleghorn will celebrate their 90th birthdays and 70th wedding anniversary at Macedonia Baptist Church fellowship hall in Villanow, on Saturday, March 24. They will receive friends and family from 1 to 5 p.m.
ENTERTAINMENT · LaFayette-Walker County Public Library Teens are meeting at the Battlefield Cinema in Fort Oglethorpe on Saturday, March 24, to see the Hunger Games (matinee showing, time TBA). The first 20 teens to bring back signed permission slips will receive a free ticket to the event. Permission slips can be obtained at the library’s front desk.
COMMUNITY · The second annual Get Your Rear in Gear Chattanooga 5K Run/Walk will take place Saturday, March 24, at Coolidge Park in Chattanooga. Funds raised will support the newly founded Greater Chattanooga Co-lon Cancer Foundation. Participants may register online in advance of race day at www.getyourrearingear.com or on race day at the race site beginning at 7:30 a.m. The 5K race will begin at 9 a.m., with race awards and survivor recognition following at 10:15 a.m. The Kiddie Run will take place at 10:45 a.m., followed by the 5K Fun Walk at 11:15 a.m. Volunteers are needed.
