A 700-mile road trip to Maryland ended for Georgia Northwestern’s Lady Bobcats in a 99-52 loss to No. 6-ranked Montgomery College-Rockville in the NJCAA Round of 16.

Sophomore Jessica Williams closed out her GNTC career with 12 points and 12 rebounds, but the highly-touted Lady Knights and their two All-Americans were too much for the junior college rookies.

Lady Knight shooting guard Alex Silva led all scorers with 23 points while forward Porcha Davis dropped in 21 of her own to send Montgomery College-Rockville (26-5) to the Elite Eight in Rochester, Minn. this week.

After jumping out to a 20-point lead, the Lady Bobcats would whittle the lead down to as 12, but an unexpected turn would spell trouble for the girls from the Peach State.

Silva and GNTC co-captain Kayci McGee collided diving for a loose ball with Silva landing awkwardly on top of McGee’s head. McGee was down on the court for nearly five minutes before being able to get to her feet. She was taken to a Maryland-area hospital where she was examined and released later that night.

However, with freshman Brittney Daughtry already unavailable with an injury, and the team having lost two players over the Christmas break, McGee’s injury left GNTC with one five players for the rest of the game.

“Fortunately, Kayci was just banged up and no real damage was done. We are glad she’s okay,” said GNTC head coach Jim Williams. “Losing Kayci hurt, but our team is tough, though, and they stayed true to their style of play and never gave up on it. Hey, we tip our hats to that other team. They are a talented squad.”

The loss ended the season for the Lady Bobcats (6-20). Our half the team’s losses came at the hands of NJCAA Division I opponents.

“We scheduled some big dogs this year in hopes of getting us ready for our region,” said Williams. “Well, we went 4-3 in the region and took home the region title, so I guess it worked well to a degree.”

This loss also marked the end of GNTC careers for McGee, Williams, Mia Morrow, and Kelsie Philpot.

“It’s our first group of second-year players to move on,” Williams added. “The program has come a long way in its first two years and they’ve played a huge part. We’ve received some interest for some of them from a few four-year colleges, and we are starting to fill spots in the 2012-13 recruiting class.”
