COMMUNITY · 2011 marks the fourth year in a row that the 1863 Ringgold Gap Battle will be reenacted in Ringgold. The weekend kicks off Friday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. with demonstrations and living history. The event, which runs through Sunday, Oct. 2, includes camps, demonstrations and living history, food and merchandise vendors, and an authentic Ringgold Gap battle reenactment. The weekend’s events will take place at Clark Farm, 237 Robin Road in Ringgold. Members of the 16 and 52 divisions will be participating in this year’s reenactment.

COMMUNITY · The LaFayette Elks will host an indoor yard sale on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. The lodge is on U.S. Highway 27 on the right just past Wal-Mart. All proceeds go to Elk charities.

SCHOOLS · Gilbert Elementary is hosting a huge homecoming tailgate party Sept. 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. with inflatable games, hotdogs, and a caravan to the LaFayette High School Homecoming Game. Dress in LHS colors and join the fun. For more information, call 706-638-2432.

COMMUNITY · Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to a special hour-long program at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center on Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. Join a Park Ranger for a discussion of the guerilla war that enveloped the area after the armies departed. The clandestine, or non-conventional, warfare that began in the area in 1864 more resembled the type of conflict imagined in the Wild West — raiders, gunfights and lynchings. Saturday, Oct. 1

COMMUNITY · LaFayette Downtown Development Authority, in cooperation with a regional fitness initiative, will host a walk and talk Saturday, Oct. 1, in downtown LaFayette. The event, held in conjunction with Heritage Day, begins at 8:30 a.m. at Joe Stock Memorial Park. Participants will walk about one mile around downtown and then return to the park. Participants will follow portions of the route of the “Battle of LaFayette” brochure, which describes the June 24, 1864, battle. Free water and T-shirts will be provided to walkers. The free event is open to the public and will last about one hour. Participants are invited to bring a breakfast snack to enjoy as they walk. The event will be cancelled if weather is inclement.

COMMUNITY · Welcome Hill Baptist Church in Trion will have a chicken/fish plate sale on Oct. 1 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Plates are $5 each and will consist of chicken/fish, fries, slaw, hush puppies, rolls, dessert, and drink. COMMUNITY · Heritage Day at the Marsh House will be held Saturday, October 1, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. The festival will feature food prepared on the grounds over an open fire, funnel cakes, homemade baked goods, entertainment, special guest Don Welch and vendors selling handmade, vintage and antique items. ENTERTAINMENT · The Charlie Daniels Band will headline Summerset 2011 at the Northwest Georgia Bank Amphitheater.
