Linda Kay DeWitt, 59, East Ridge, Tenn.Linda K. DeWitt of East Ridge, Tenn., died Sunday, July 24, 2011, at a local hospital. She was 59.
She was a native of Abilene, Kan., and had lived in the Chattanooga area for the past 27 years. She had worked at Chattem Industries and at H&R Block, loved camping and was a Girl Scout leader for over 10 years. She was also a member of Jones Memorial UMC in East Ridge. Being the wife of a career soldier, she lived in many places, including Germany.
Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Ronald DeWitt; three children, Caleb DeWitt, Teresa DeWitt and Karen DeWitt; her parents, Donald and Arlene Stacey of East Ridge, Tenn.; brothers, Douglas (Diana) Stacey of Cali., and Dan (Sandra) Stacey of East Ridge, Tenn.; sister, Pam (Ken) Clouse of East Ridge, Tenn.; brother-in-law Raymond (Kathy) DeWitt of Texas, and the loves of her life, her nieces and nephews.
Graveside memorial service: Wednesday, July 27, at 9:30 a.m.with Rev. David Hagen officiating. Burial: Chattanooga National Cemetery. Jack A. Eubanks, 84, Chattanooga, Tenn.Jack A. Eubanks of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Sunday, July 24, 2011. He was 84.
He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas and was of the Baptist faith. He was an Army veteran and well-known car salesman. He and his previous wife, Bettye Eubanks, owned and operated Car Care Center, Tire Store and Wrecker Service in Red Bank for more than 30 years. Jack was a funny man and always had a joke to tell. He had a heart as big as Texas and would literally give you the shirt off his back. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa (Nick) Tuders and Karla (Denny) Smith, all of Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.; two special grandsons and their spouses, Kevin (Tracy) Rice and Erik (Chiesa) Smith, who will sorely miss him; three great-granddaughters, Destiny Rice, Kinzie and Jaylin Smith; one brother, John Eubanks of Chattanooga, Tenn.; sister, Eva Liner of Rossville, and several nieces and nephews.
Service: Private, and there will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff with Hospice of Chattanooga for their care and concern for Mr. Eubanks. Don Lamar Jones, 56, LaFayetteDon Lamar Jones of LaFayette died Tuesday, July 26, 2011, in a local health care facility. He was 56.
He was preceded in death by his father, T.J. Jones; one sister, Linda Worley, and one brother, Larry Jones.
Survivors include two daughters, Donna (Nathan) Middleton and April (Robert) Broussard; three sons, Lee (Lora) Jones, Matthew (Barbara) Jones and Lamar Jones; two sisters, Diann (Russ) Frost and Lois (Mack) Waters; 11 grandchildren; special newphew, Anthony Jones, and several other nieces and nephews.

Edward W. Koehler, 47, RinggoldSgt. Edward W. Koehler of Ringgold died Monday, July 18, 2011, while defending our country in Afghanistan. He was 47.
He was a native of Pennsylvania and had been a resident of Ringgold for three years. Sgt. Koehler served in the United States Marine Corps for six years and joined the National Guard where he served for 20 years. He was due to retire in January of 2012. Sgt. Koehler was a truck driver with Crowe Transportation and was a member of Cowboy Church. He was a passionate motorcyclist and a dirt track racing enthusiast.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Koehler.
Survivors include his loving wife, lifelong friend and life partner, Cheryl Koehler; daughters, Shelbi Koehler of Ringgold and Toby Koehler and Kayla Koehler, both of Pine Grove, Penn.; mother, Ruthie Koehler of Lebanon, Penn.; mother-in-law, Rita Treadwell of Ringgold; sisters, Elaine Dietz of Annville, Pa., and Nicole McCabe of Lebanon, Penn., and several nieces and nephews.

She was a lifelong resident of the north Georgia area, was a loving mother and attended Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her son, Liam McCord, and father, Bob “Glenn” Horne.

Vera Swansbury Smith, 84, East Ridge, Tenn.Vera Swansbury Smith of East Ridge, Tenn., died Monday, July 25, 2011, and now she is singing in heaven. She was 84.
A native of South Wales, Great Britain, she met her husband in World War II while on scholarship at Cambridge University. She lived most of her life in East Ridge and was an active member of the East Ridge Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir and participated in VBS and Cub Scouts.
After her husband’s death in 1986, she went to work at the Senior Neighbors of Chattanooga. She served there for 15 years as an assistant director. She was active in bridge groups, was a member of the British Daughters, having served as president, and was also a member of the War Brides. Her passions in life were her faith and her family, and she had a love for children and the elderly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold “Smitty” Smith; three sons, Ronnie, Eddie and Steve Smith, and brother, Gordon Swansbury.
Survivors include her daughter and son in law, Vicki and David Hentz of Chickamauga; sister, Elaine Penny; brothers, Keith Swansbury, John Swansbury and Arthur Swansbury; grandchildren, Heather, Jeremy, Jonathan, Joey, Ronnie and Christy, and several nieces and nephews, all of Great Britain.

Gladys Beatrice Townsend Hawkins, 94, RinggoldGladys Beatrice Townsend Hawkins of Ringgold died Tuesday, July 26, 2011, after a lengthy illness. She was 94.
She was of the Baptist faith and was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert E. Hawkins Sr.; daughter, Jean Mangrum, and a granddaughter, Kimberly Boydston.
Survivors include son, Albert E. (Loretta) Hawkins Jr. of Marietta; daughter, Kay (Charles) Stokes of Ringgold; brother, J. C. (Dot) Chastain of LaFayette; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Velma Lee Roberson Loggins, 91, LaFayetteVelma Lee Roberson Loggins of LaFayette died Tuesday, July 26, 2011. She was 91.
She was born to the late Wiley and Nora Fain Roberson Aug. 26, 1919, in Mount Vernon. Mrs. Loggins was of the Baptist faith and she retired from Color Spectrum.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Lee Loggins; two sons, Charles L. Loggins and Clayton E. Loggins, and daughter, Katherine Loggins Haston.
Survivors include her daughter, Fannie Lou Reeves; two sons, Rex and Allen Loggins, all of LaFayette; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

George Richard Taylor, 75, Chattanooga, Tenn.George Richard “Fossil” Taylor of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Wednesday, July 27, 2011. He was 75.
He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas and was of the Baptist faith. He retired from the Double Cola Company after many years of service and enjoyed fishing. He was also a NASCAR fan and loved playing dominoes and working on watches.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Florence Taylor, and sister, Betty Holland.

Johnny Carl Weiss, 76, Rock SpringJohnny Carl Weiss of Rock Spring died Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at his residence. He was 76.
He had been a resident of north Georgia since 1973, moving here from Kankakee, Ill. He retired from Roper Corp. after 42 years. Mr. Weiss had been a member of Fort Oglethorpe United Methodist Church for 25 years, where he was a Sunday school teacher, member of the finance committee, trustee and a member of the choir.
He was charming, smart, funny, and had a one-of-a-kind sense of humor. He always had a witty comment just waiting to come out. His fiercely competitive side showed during card games with family and friends. John was athletic and loved golf. He attended several of The Masters in Atlanta and played courses across the country.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Peggy Ingram and Mary Jane Higgins.

Blaire Fredrick Barber, 55, Big CanoeBlaire Fredrick Barber of Big Canoe died Tuesday, July 19, 2011. He was 55.
Blaire was born in Tacoma, Wash., and raised in Lakewood, Wash., and Marietta before residing in North Ridgeville, Ohio, Columbia, Md., Princeton, N.J., and Big Canoe. Blaire graduated from Sprayberry High School in 1975 and attended Georgia State University, Howard Community College and the University of Maryland. He was a much beloved father, son, brother and friend. Blaire loved life and his family, leaving a legacy of good spirit and enthusiasm in his wake.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Beverlee Barber.
Survivors include his son, Kyle Barber of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter, Katie Barber of Hiawassee; father, William Barber of Big Canoe; sisters and brothers-in-law, Debbie and Bill Allgood of Marietta and Georgia and Mike Anders of Marietta; brother and sister-in-law, Jeffrey and Dawn Barber of Ellicot City, Md.; grandmother, Ruth Haman of Denver, Colo., and many nieces and nephews.

She was born to the late Ralph and Lula Suggs on May 11, 1929, in Rossville. Mrs. Hill was a member of South Rossville Baptist Church and a retired x-ray technician with 25 years of service.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, W. Forrest Hill Jr., with whom she resided in Rome for 30 years.
Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Cathy Suggs of Chickamauga; two nephews and their spouses, Dr. Rob and Kim Suggs of Madison, Ala., and Greg and Esther Suggs of Chickamauga; two great-nieces and two great-nephews.

She was a lifelong resident of the north Georgia area and was of the Baptist faith. She served as the past president of the American Legion Ladies Auxillary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, J.B. and Dovie Woodall Reynolds.

Dorothy Mae Decker Welch, 67, LaFayetteDorothy “Dot” Mae Decker Welch of LaFayette died Thursday, July 21, 2011. She was 67.
Dot was a member of the Gospel Light Christian Fellowship Church.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Joe Decker; father, Austin Decker; mother, Lillie Mae Decker; sister, Christine Decker Pell, and two brothers, Carl Decker and Charles (Bo) Decker.
Survivors include her daughters, Angie Corbin and Melinda Jewell, both of LaFayette; sons, Steven Welch of Walton, N.Y., Richard Cooper of Rossville and Michael Cooper of LaFayette; brother, Jim Decker of LaFayette; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Dale Westbrook, 74, RossvilleRetired U.S. Navy Commander Dale Allen Westbrook of Rossville died on Monday, July 18, 2011 at his residence. He was 74.
He was a 1954 graduate of Rossville High School and a 1993 inductee into its Sports Hall of Fame. Graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958, he served in the Naval Aviation Community until his retirement in 1978. He was of the Protestant faith and a member of McFarland Memorial United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gisela Klara Reichstein, and his parents, Darrel Edwin and Alice Clarkson Westbrook.
Survivors include his brother, Retired U.S. Navy Captain Darrel E. Westbrook Jr. (Jean); several nieces, nephews, great niece, great nephews, cousins, and special aunt, Mildred Beagle Clarkson.

Phil Adkins, 55, RossvillePhil Adkins of Rossville died on Wednesday, July 2011 at a local hospital after a brave battle with cancer. He was 55.
Although Phil lived with lifelong disabilities, he “carried a full cup” with love, patience and humilty, always caring for others and always with a smile.
He was born on April 24, 1956, graduated from Red Bank High School, and received his associate’s degree in business from Chattanooga State. He was an active, lifelong member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga where he was a member of the Friendship Sunday school class and the missions committee, and participated in the South Wind Play House. Phil also served as an usher and deacon for the church. He loved his church and church family supremely. His passion in life was caring for his family and friends.
Survivors include his parents, Dr. Thomas and Claudine Adkins of Rossville; two brothers, Tom (Myra) Adkins of Hixon, Tenn., and Steve (Marcia) Adkins of Fort Payne, Ala.; nephew, Tommy (Kim) Adkins of New Orleans, La.; nieces, Mary Adkins of Chattanooga, Tenn., Christy (Chris) Daniel of Hixson, Tenn., and Jennifer Adkins of Florence, Ala., and many other loving family members.

She was born to the late William and Littie Stoker Powell on June 8, 1920. She was the wife of the late Louie Hegwood and stepmother of Barbara, Marvin, Larry and Gregg Hegwood. She was the sister of Effie Lee Fowler and Everett (Bill) Powell. She was a charter member of Foster Mill Baptist Church and attended as often as she was able. She loved her church and friends and will be missed.

She graduated from LaFayette High School and later retired from the Walker County Clerk of Court’s office. She was a member of Chattooga Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years.
She was born in Walker County to the late Samuel Price Gilbreath and Emma Ruth (Rogers) Garmany, and was also preceded in death by her husband, C.W. “Dub” Waters, and sister, Frances Irene Gilbreath.
Survivors include her daughter, Claudia Ann Harris of Atlanta; grandson, Major Chuck Bowen of Wichita, Kan.; granddaughter, Ann Claudette Waters and her husband Drew Homa, and dear friend, Gerald Stacy, all of Atlanta.

JoNell Malone, 89, Rock SpringJoNell B. Malone of Rock Spring, died on Tuesday, July 19th, 2011 at 6:45 in her home with her family. She was 89.
She was born August 25, 1921, in Campbell, Texas, to the late Coe James Barnett and Bessie Mae Robertson Barnett. She was a member of Center Point Baptist Church in Noble, having trusted Christ as her Lord and Savior during a Vacation Bible School at the age of 10.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Smith Malone; daughter, Sharon Malone Whiddon, and her brother and sister-in-law Hal and Juanita Barnett.
Survivors are her brother, William B. Barnett and wife Kathleen; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Nancy Malone; son-in-law, Roy Whiddon; seven granddaughters; 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

David Parham, Albuquerque, N. M.David Anderson Parham of Albuquerque, N. M., died Sunday, July 17, 2011.
He was a native of Chattanooga Valley and had lived in New Mexico for the past several years. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp., serving during World War II. He was retired from Montgomery Ward after many years of service and was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Breneman Parham, on August 24, 2006.
He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Fannie Mae Parham Williams and Frances Parham Roper, and brothers, Forrest, Arthur, Paul, Charles, Ernest, Edward and James Parham.

Edwin Lebron Simmons, 48, RinggoldEdwin Lebron Simmons of Ringgold died Thursday, July 19, 2011, in a local hospital. He was 48.
He was employed as minister of administration at Peavine Baptist Church, where he also served as a deacon. He had worked for Industrial Rubber and Safety/Samson Industrial in Chattanooga and White Cap Construction and Supply Company in Atlanta. He was a great cook and enjoyed sports photography, having taken photos of University of Georgia football for several years. He was an avid runner and completed several marathons He also enjoyed time with family, especially his girls.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Simmons; maternal grandparents, Gladston and Marie Manning, and mother and father-in-law, Margaret and Larry Stanfield.

A lifelong resident of the north Georgia area, he was an employee of Yates Bleachery, was a graduate of Ringgold High School in 1968, attended North Georgia College in Dahlonega and was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Webb Brown; parents, John E. and Estelle Brown; stepmother, Clara Rhodes Brown, and stepbrother, Larry Rhodes.

He was born in Rock Island, Ill., to the late James and Jean Reinhart and was of the Christian faith. He had lived in Illinois and Iowa for most of his life before moving to the north Georgia area in 1993. He was the owner and operator of Reinhart Contracting Services for more than 10 years and was also a founding member of the Outsiders Brotherhood Motorcycle Club. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and an honorable brother to all those in the biker community. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him.

She was born Sept. 25, 1912, in Pelham, Grundy County, Tenn., and had made her home in East Ridge for the past seven years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and friend.
She loved her Sunday school class and her church, Westside Baptist in Rossville.
She was a cultivator of the earth, toiling daily to plant and tend her gardens, which gave her most comfort and pleasure. We will all miss her, but knowing that she is where she wants to be makes us happy and that she is at peace.
She was preceeded in death by her parents, Thomas Newton Meeks and Myrtle Jimmie Burroughs; husband, David Morgan Burnett; brothers, Louis, Stanley, Paul David and Earl Meeks; and sisters, Ruth Meeks Baugh and Nellie Scruggs Simmons; son-in-law, Rev. George Johnson, and grand son-in- law, Jeffrey Lee Schweitzer.

Newell Earl Cleghorn, 87, Hixson, Tenn.Newell Earl Cleghorn, 87, of Hixson, Tenn., died Sunday, July 17, 2011. He was 87.
A lifelong resident of the north Georgia and Chattanooga area, Newell was born to the late Martha Hall Cleghorn and Earl Hewitt Cleghorn, in Mill Creek, in Whitfield County. Newell was a professed born-again Christian. He was retired from the Dupont Company in1983 with 33 years of service.
Newell was a World War II veteran and had a variety of experiences while in the service. He served in both the 94th and 1st Infantry Divisions in Europe. He remembered pleasant experiences including being a part of a parade for Patton in Czechoslovakia at the end of the war. He learned to ski in the German Alps and rode military trained horses on snow covered mountain trails. Newell also spent time in Nuremburg, Germany, where he attended the war crimes trials. He was furloughed in Switzerland, on the French Riviera and toured around Monaco.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Georgia Ann Bryant Cleghorn; sister, Mary Lillian Allen, and two brothers, Troy and Henry Cleghorn.

Timothy L. Clark, RinggoldRev. Timothy L. Clark died Monday, July 11, 2011, after an extended illness.
He was born in Walker County and was the son of Amos Abson Clark and Bonnie Louise Marks Clark. He was a Baptist minister and a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church and the Houston Baptist Association. He pastored several churches which included Welcome Hill Baptist in Ringgold, Lakeshore and Hawpond Baptist in Cordele, Calvary in Dawson, Dooling Baptist in Dooling and Mars Hill in Vienna. In the early and mid 90’s, Rev. Clark preached numerous revivals and jubilees throughout Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. In 1996, he graduated from Covington Theological Sermiary with an associate’s degree in sacred literature. In the late 90’s, he had a radio and nursing home ministry known as “Hammer Ministries.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, Amos Abson Clark and Bonnie Clark Wooden, and brother, Gary Clark.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Ann Culpepper Clark, daughter, Alicia Michelle James of Cordele; three grandchildren, Megan Taylor, Cody Taylor and Frederick Taylor, all of Cordele; great-grandson, Hayden Taylor of Calhoun; two brothers, Jim Clark and Johnny Clark, both of LaFayette; four sisters, Mary Colbert, Martha Hare, Pat Spears and her husband, Maurice, and Theresa Lida Kitchens, all of LaFayette; sister-in-law and her husband, Fredrica and Randy Darsey of Cordele; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Tommy and Carol Culpepper of Cleveland, Tenn., and Rick and Elaine Culpepper of Vienna, and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service: Wednesday, July 13, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home with Dr. Ken Conner officiating. Special music, which included “When they Ring those Golden Bells” and “Victory in Jesus,” was played by Kathy Hall, pianist. Terry and Brenda Wadford and Joyce Calhoun sang “I’ll Fly Away.” The service was closed with “Hallalujah Square” by Mrs. Calhoun. Pallbearers: Allen Hutchens, Tony Fisher, Wade Gilbert, Milt Collins, Tim Clark and Tim Roark. Honorary pallbearers: the staff and residents of Cordelia Manor and the staff of Crisp Regional Hospice. He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga, Tenn., area.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace King Jr. and Devora Pearl Martin King.
Survivors include his daughter, Alexandra Lancaster-King; five sisters, Kay King-Windom, Billie K. Hegwood, Teresita McPherson, Mary King and Denise King White, and several nieces and nephews.

She was born in Crossville, Tenn., to the late Joe and Laura West, and was also preceeded in death by her siblings, John L., Bill, Ernest West and Louise White.
Lois was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church in Rock Spring.
Survivors include her loving spouse of 38 years, Glenn Payton Jr. of Rock Spring; daughter, Cathey (Eddie) Harris of LaFayette; sisters, Edna Richardson of LaFayette and Florace Ramey of Rock Spring; grandchildren, Nathan Abbott, Brent, Trent and Paden Harris; great-grandchildren, Amber and Amanda Abbott, Wade and Jarred Harris and Minnie White, and several nieces and nephews.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Chattanooga and was a homemaker, loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Covenant Baptist Church in Red Bank.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Fostine Guffey, and brother, Edward Lee Moore.
