Clara Maye Tennyson Durgin, 78, Rossville
Clara Maye Tennyson Durgin of Rossville died Monday, June 27, 2011, after a brief illness at a local nursing home. She was 78.
Mrs. Durgin was born in 1933 in Ten Mile, Tenn., to parents the late William L. and the late Clara Mildred and was also preceded in death by a sister and two brothers. Her husband David preceded her in death by 51 weeks.
She graduated from Rossville High School and attended McKenzie College. Mrs. Durgin was an administrator of the YWCA/YMCA for many years. She retired from the North River branch of the Chattanooga YMCA. She was a true Proverbs 31 woman, particularly verse 38: “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her” (NIV). Although physically frail for the last several years, Mrs. Durgin was a spiritual powerhouse. She was a longtime member of the East Ridge Church of God and a current member of the Temple of Praise Church in Rossville.
Her greatest legacy to her children was her love for and service to God. Always alongside her husband, she devoted decades of service to Christ, as the co-director of children’s church, Sunday school teacher, part-time director of the senior adult ministry and co-director of outreach ministries to many nursing homes. In her later years, she helped with administrative tasks for the church.
Mrs. Durgin was a much loved and well-respected lady in her family, church and community. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Survivors include their five children, Mildred Hardeman (Steve) of Brooksville, Fla., Tricia Miller (Julius) of Clarkesville, David Durgin Jr. (Patricia) of Ellijay, Lynda Greene (Phil) of Acworth and Billy Durgin (Angela) of Cleveland, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty and Faye, and one brother, Paul.
Funeral services: Saturday, July 2, at 1 p.m. in the Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Danny Lance and Wendell Smith officiating. Burial: Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park. Frances Jewell Anderson, 86, Ringgold
Frances Jewell Anderson of Ringgold died Friday, June 24, 2011, in a local health care facility. She was 86.
She was a lifelong resident of north Georgia and a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church where she was a nursery worker. Mrs. Anderson worked in the cafeteria at Ringgold Junior High School and also cooked at Camp Scott Patterson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Anderson, and brother, LeeBron Boss.

Kenneth Eugene Conner, 64, Rossville
Kenneth Eugene Conner of Rossville died Thursday, June 23, 2011. He was 64.
He had lived in the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas for most of his life and was a member, deacon and elder of Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Rossville. He was an Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam War, and was previously employed with Shaw Industries as an inventory clerk for more than 20 years. He enjoyed drawing and painting and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Faye Conner.

Mattie Beasley of Rossville died Sunday, June 26, 2011. She was 92.
She was born on Lookout Mountain to the late Silas and Maude Fowler and was preceded in death by her husband, Rolly Dean Beasley.
She was of the Presbyterian faith.

She was formerly secretary of Chattanooga Valley Elementary School and Ed Wright Chevrolet. Mrs. Smith was a member of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church and a former member of Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Alvin “Cotton” Smith.

Mack Delano Stevens of Chickamauga died Wednesday, June 22, 2011. He was 69.
He was born to the late Lummie B. Stevens and Maude Fobbus Stevens Fowler in DeKalb County, Ala. Mack loved to listen to music, especially country music. He also loved fishing, television game shows and Atlanta Braves baseball.
He was also preceded in death by his nephew, Steve Lance, and great-nephew, Scott Lance.

Benjamin Ross Loughridge, 93
Benjamin Ross Loughridge died Wednesday, June 22, 2011. He was 93.
Mr. Loughridge was born to the late William Benjamin Loughridge and the late Maggie Wheeler Loughridge on Jan. 12, 1918. He was a member of LaFayette First Baptist Church and was owner and operator of Loughridge Equipment since 1960. He had served on the Board of Directors for the Bank of LaFayette since 1976. In 1941, he became a founding member and the Board of Directors of the Walker County Farm Bureau. He served on the Walker County Planning Commission. He was involved with the farming community of Walker County his entire life.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Henrietta Penny Loughridge, and sister, Genelle Roberts.
Survivors include his daughters, Suzanne (Howard) Mulcay of Fort Myers, Fla., and Kay (Jimmy) Dendy of LaFayette; son, Bill (Karen) Loughridge of LaFayette; sisters, Doris Potts of Rock Spring and Avis Thomas of LaFayette; seven grandsons; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and special caregiver, Imojean McKissick.

Bobby Lee Ledford of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Saturday, June 18, 2011 at his residence. He was 63.
A lifelong resident of the Ringgold and Chattanooga area, he was of the Baptist faith. Bobby was part Choctaw Indian; he walked with the Great Spirit and in his circle of friends he was known as “Chief.”
He was preceded in death by his father, Quincey Ledford, and mother and stepfather; Margaret and James G. Chambers Sr.

Betty Witt Hixson, 83, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Betty Witt Hixson of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Monday, June 20, 2011. She was 83.
Betty retired as a professional secretary from State Farm Insurance Company. She worked for agents Jack Hixson, Harry Au and most recently Larry Pyatt. She was a graduate of Ooltewah High School. She was very active in the Insurance Woman’s Organization, serving as past president and was honored with the Insurance Woman of the year award. She taught Sunday school and was a longtime member of Brainerd Baptist Church. She was a lecturer for Weight Watchers, where she was a Century Club member. She loved cooking and entertaining for others.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George William Hixson; parents, Owen and Grace Witt, and son George William “Butch” Hixson.

Alexander Rhyne Andrews, 88, Columbia, S.C.
Alexander Rhyne Andrews of Columbia, S.C., died Friday, June 17, 2011. He was 88.
Born February 23, 1923, in LaFayette, he was the son of the late Maurice Neil and Foy Ellen Rhyne Andrews. He was raised in LaFayette and Atlanta. The family resided in Chevy Chase, Md., in the years before World War II. Mr. Andrews served in Europe during World War II as an officer with the Army Signal Corps as a German language interpreter. After the war, he completed his bachelor’s degree at Emory University in Atlanta, where he was a member of the ATO fraternity and the golf team.
In the years following, Mr. Andrews worked for Scott Paper Company, served as VP of sales for Floors Incorporated in Fort Worth, Texas, and ultimately retired from commercial real estate brokerage in Columbia. He was an avid golfer, waterskier and outdoorsman. He possessed a lifelong love of history, languages and cultures. He was very outgoing and curious about people, their lives and histories.
Survivors include his daughter, Cheryl Fortune Andrews of Cumming; son, John Alexander Andrews; daughter-in-law, Virginia C. Andrews, and two grandchildren, John and Lucas of Columbia, S.C.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Ann Andrews Morgan.

Roberta Jones Chastain, 87, Chickamauga
Roberta Jones Chastain of Chickamauga died Thursday, June 16, 2011. She was 87.
She was born in Cedar Grove to the late Robert Duke and Mary Ruby Jones. Roberta retired from Provident Insurance Company after 38 years of service and attended Oakwood Baptist Church in Chickamauga.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Katherine Littlejohn, and brothers, Robert and Leroy Jones.
Survivors include her son, Russell (April) Chastain of Chickamauga; grandchildren, Misty, Christy, Evie and Shea; great-grandchildren, Miley and Haley; niece, Kim Helton, and nephew, Sam Littlejohn.

Nancy Lee Lehman of Ringgold died Sunday, June 19, 2011, at her residence. She was 71.
Survivors include her children, Carol McCoy, Marianne (Ken) McCloskey, Sharon (Greg) Smith and Nicholas Lehman, and grandchildren, Matt Masulis, Joshua, Amanda and Victoria Smith.

Charlotte Petty Rogers, 73, Rossville
Charlotte Petty Rogers of Rossville died Saturday, June 18, 2011, at her residence. She was 73.
She was a lifelong resident of the north Georgia area and faithful member of Battlefield Parkway Church of the Nazarene. Charlotte retired from Unum Provident after 33 years.
She was preceded in death by husband of 47 years, Jim Rogers, and son, Jeffrey Rogers.

Frances Ervin Barker, 76, Manchester, Tenn.
Frances Ervin Barker of Manchester, Tenn., died Wednesday, June 15, 2011, after an extended illness, at Life Care Center of Tullahoma, Tenn. She was 76.
She was a member of Anchor of Hope Baptist Church. Mrs. Barker was a registered x-ray technician at Erlanger Medical Center for over 40 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley Orville Barker, and parents, Hubert L. and Emma Sue Barnett Ervin.
Survivors include her daughter, Alice (Tim) Vaughn of Manchester, Tenn.; sisters, Becky (Charles) Corneilson of Rossville and Judith (James) Dempsey of Ringgold; several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and -nephews.

Jamie “Pete” Glover, 82, Rock Spring
Jamie “Pete” Glover of Rock Spring died Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at a local assisted living facility. He was 82.
He had lived in the Chattanooga and north Georgia area all his life. Mr. Glover retired after working for more than 65 years as a plumber, and was a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 43.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Glover; daughter, Cynthia E. “Cindy” Coker; son, Eric “Bunt” Lamar Glover, and several grandchildren.

Charles Wayne Robertson of Rossville died Wednesday, June 15, 2011. He was 65.
Charlie was a lifelong resident of north Georgia and a member of Peoples Baptist Church. He retired from Kenco in 2010 after 43 years and loved his church, fishing and woodworking.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Judy Robertson, and father, Hansel Robertson.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Robertson; sons, Danny (Elizabeth) and Rodney (Sandy) Robertson; mother, Louise Broome; sisters Diane (Terry) Bethune and Karen (Eddie) Ray; brother, Jerry (Glenda) Robertson; stepdaughters, Kristy Bailey and Stacy Quarles; 13 grandchildren and six nieces and nephews.
