The seven remaining “American Idol” contestants kicked it new school Wednesday night on Fox’s hit reality show, as they each performed songs from the past decade as part of “Songs of the 21st Century” week.

Rossville teen Lauren Alaina was the final performer of the night, closing the show with Sara Evans’ 2001 hit “Born to Fly.”

Alaina’s take on the catchy upbeat tune was well-received by both audience and judges, though the judges seemed to agree it didn’t showcase Alaina’s considerable vocal talents.

“You can sing anything, but you must believe that,” judge Randy Jackson said. “Challenge yourself.”

Producer Jimmy Iovine, who remarked in a rehearsal session that the 16-year-old is her biggest competition, also shared that same sentiment.

“Lauren pulls back for fear of failing,” Iovine said.

“If she gets over that hurdle, she can win it,” he added. “She is that magical a singer.”

With strong performances also turned in by her six counterparts, votes are up for grabs going into tonight’s re-sults show, which airs at 8 o’clock. Alaina has yet to be in the show’s “bottom three” vote-getters since fan voting began.

sorry new girl2010 I have read some of your posts, I have heard Lauren sing in person many times in and believe me, she has got more talent than you give her credit. I read one of your posts that said you will enter AI, so I suspect you criticizing is from jealousy and not valid. Sorry that is just my view.

Not to be mean, but I can't believe she has made it this far. (to many KIDDOs voting is my guess) There is so much more TALENT in the others. I really think one of the guys will take this one! I think voting for the homegirl isn't necessarily a bad thing is just may not be well deserved in this case. Sorry just my view on it!

Lauren needs to get off the country music and show that she has talent in other genres. If she wants to stay a little country, she should try Shania Twain and let it all hang out. She's being too safe.
