Dorothy G. Cumbee, 88, Ringgold
Dorothy G. Cumbee of Ringgold died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at her residence. She was 88.
She was a member of Peavine Baptist Church for over 25 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sherman and Imogene Gartrell; husbands, David Champion and Herbert R. Cumbee; daughter, Jill Champion McMurrain; brother, Bud Gartrell; and grandson, Tim Howze.
Survivors include a son, Randy Cumbee of Rock Spring; three daughters, Lydia Hullender of Ringgold, Winnie Holley of Jasper, and Nancy Howze of Stockbridge; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Carl W. "Woody" Byrd, 86, Chattanooga/north Georgia
Carl W. "Woody" Byrd a retired Employee Benefits Consultant died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, in East Ridge, Tenn. He was 86.
A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia area, he was employed in employee and personnel management within the area of textile industry. For many years, he traveled a five-state area as a direct writing general insurance agent in the manufacturing and commercial lines and for a time operated his own insurance agency in East Ridge.
He was a decorated World War II Navy veteran serving in the Pacific Theater. During the Korean War he was recalled to active duty and served in Korea. He was a member of the National Exchange Club, Chattanooga Industrial Personnel Club, American Legion Post 95-East Ridge and Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 3670-Fort Oglethorpe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry R. and Katie Glenn Byrd; brothers, Albert C. Byrd, Henry R. Byrd Jr., Ted T. Byrd; and sister, Evelyn Byrd Hall.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Viola Williams Byrd; son, Terry Alan (Brenda) Byrd of Fort Oglethorpe; daughter, Karen Byrd (Terry) Moore of Ringgold; grandsons, Justin Wayne Moore of Ringgold, Joshua Alan Moore of Ringgold; granddaughters, Shelly Byrd (Danny) Fow of Ringgold, Tara Byrd (Kenneth) Wolf of Chattanooga, Tenn.; step-grandson, Casey Riden of Rossville; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Joyce King, 81, Rossville
Elizabeth Joyce King of Rossville died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, in a local health care facility. She was 81.
A native of DeKalb County, Ala., she had spent the greater part of her life in the Rossville area and was a member of the East Ridge Church of the Nazarene. Mrs. King was retired from Chattanooga Glass Company following many years of service as a bookkeeper.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie King, and son, Nathan King.

Marvin Taylor “Chubby” Martin Sr., 81, Chattanooga/north Georgia
Marvin Taylor “Chubby” Martin Sr. died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2012, in a local hospital. He was 81.
He was a native of Virginia and had lived in the Chattanooga, Tenn., and north Georgia areas for 31 years. Mr. Martin was retired from Burlington Transportation after 38 years, and had been an over the road truck driver for more than 55 years.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Sarah Wilkerson Martin; sons, Marvin “Stump” (Deb) Martin Jr. of Rossville, Michael “Chig” Martin, Marshall Scott (Erin) Martin of Brentwood, Tenn.; grandchildren, Misty Dawn Martin, Sarah-Catherine Martin, Xan Martin, Dusty Rudd, Madison Martin and McKenzie Martin.

Aileen Vanderburg Wheeler of Flintstone died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at her home.
She was born Oct. 11, 1911, and was longtime residents of Bessemer and McCalla, Ala., before moving to be near her daughter in Flintstone. Her 100 years were devoted to the love and care of her family. Her guidance and sense of humor will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Charles T. Wheeler; brothers, Carl and Harold Vanderburg; and sister Cleo Tucker.
Survivors include her daughter, Linda (John) Brown of Flintstone; brother, Gilbert Vanderburg of Pensacola, Fla.; grandsons, Jason (Gretchen) Brown of Ringgold, Daniel (Heather) Brown of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and five great-grandchildren.

Luellen Brown, 79, Tunnel Hill
Luellen Brown of Tunnel Hill died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012. She was 79.
A lifelong resident of the Catoosa County area, she was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and a former employee of Sweetwater Rug and of World Carpet.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ezekiel and Lue Sendy Stapp Brown, and two brothers, Joe Brown and Olie E. “Bug” Brown.
Survivors include four sisters, Sarah Inez Jones of Ringgold, Mary Eslinger, Betty Brown, and Una Brown, all of Tunnel Hill; three brothers, Paul Brown, Wilburn Brown, and Mack Brown, all of Tunnel Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

Billy Eugene Bice, 55, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Billy Eugene Bice of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, in a local hospital. He was 55.
Billy was a native and lifelong resident of Chattanooga, Tenn., and was of the Baptist faith. He was a graduate of Kirkman High School and was employed as a produce manager with Food Lion. Billy enjoyed fishing, collecting antiques and thoroughly enjoyed life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Annie Mae Bice; sister, Betty Louise Raines; and brothers, David Farris, Clarence Edward Bice Jr., Carl Eugene Bice, and Pete Bice.
Survivors include his sisters, Audrey Robinson, Mary Miller, and Patricia Gaddis; special nieces, Shawnna and Angela Whitt; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Billy will be greatly missed by his poodle, Sebastian.

Betty Jane Daniel of Chickamauga died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012. She was 56.
She was born to the late Hubert and Bethie Daniel in LaFayette on Aug. 28, 1955. She was a recent employee with LaFayette Healthcare and a longtime employee at Mohawk in Fort Oglethorpe.

David Nathan Evans, 84, Rossville
David Nathan Evans of Rossville died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, in a local health care facility. He was 84.
Mr. Evans had lived all of his life in the north Georgia area and was an elder at Chattanooga Valley Church of Christ for many years and was currently a member of Greens Lake Road Church of Christ. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was retired from Lee-Smith as a body mechanic with 27 years of service, and he was known for driving his 1934 coupe around town. He loved everything about cars, fishing, camping, and bike riding.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Linda Evans; and brothers and sisters, Kenneth, Joe, Carl, Susie, Mary Louise, and Nellie.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Jewell Greene Evans; children, Bonnie (Jerry) Williams, Christine (Barry) Meade, and Ann (Reid) Perry; grandchildren, Evan, Jobie, Haven, Josh, Nathan, Cody, Seth, Brooke and Amber.

Donald Thomas Ossman, 82, Ringgold
Donald Thomas Ossmann of Ringgold died Friday Feb. 10, 2012. He was 82.
A native of Chicago, Ill., he has lived in the Ringgold area for the past four years and was formerly of Lecanto, Fla. Donald was a former employee of Brentwood Retirement Center where he worked security for four years, a member of First Baptist Church of Lecanto, a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served during the Koran War, member of the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union No.123, member of the VFW and the Korean War Veterans of Citrus County, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline Ossmann; parents, William Lewis and Lillian Ossmann; and two sons, Timothy John and Paul Ossmann.
Survivors include five sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Stella Ossmann of Jacksonville, Fla., Russ and Ronda Ossmann of Valrico, Fla., Robert and Abby Ossmann of Seattle, Wash., Joseph and Michelle Ossmann of Ringgold, and Michael and Lori Ossmann of Macclenny, Fla.; two brothers, John Ossmann of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Norman Ossmann of Milpitas, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Sandra Lee Powelson of LaFayette died Monday, Feb. 13, 2012. She was 74.
Sandra was a member of the First United Methodist Church of LaFayette, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
She was preceded in death by son, Rickey Lee Powelson; brother, Richard L. Shuck; parents, Millard L., and Rachel E. Shuck.

She was the owner and operator of the Dinner Bell in LaFayette for 30 years.

Rickey Eugene Lee Tuell of Rossville died Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at his home. He was 54.
He lived in the Chattanooga, Tenn., and north Georgia area all of his life and was a self-employed painter. He loved to fish and he loved his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Janice Palmer.

Linnie Mae Carter Smithers of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012. She was 93.
For the past eight years she had resided at National Health Care in Ft. Oglethorpe. Prior to that, she had been a resident of East Ridge, Tenn., where she touched the lives of countless children while working at the East Ridge Presbyterian Day Care. She was a member of East Ridge Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin E. Smithers Sr.; her parents, Eva Mae Rogers Carter and Walter Nathan Carter; and two sisters, Annie Belle Siders and Molly Johnson.

Lewis Eugene Black, 75, Tunnel Hill
Lewis Eugene Black of Tunnel Hill died Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at his residence. He was 75.
A lifelong resident of the Catoosa County area, he was an employee of Hank’s Carpet in Tunnel Hill, where he worked for 10 years in sales. Lewis loved woodwork and was a devoted husband and father. Respected in the community, he will be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Mattie Dills Black.
Survivors include his loving wife, Heidi Muller Black of Tunnel Hill; son, Timothy Black of Tunnel Hill; three stepchildren, Christopher Fountain and Michelle Simpson, both of Tunnel Hill, and Glenn Smith of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Richard Alva Clark of Chickamauga died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012. He was 59.
He was born in LaFayette to the late Alva Franklin and Laura Jewell McKaig Clark. He was a lifelong resident of Walker County and was of the Christian faith. He was a owner/operator truck driver for several years.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant brother, Marion Franklin Clark.

Mrs. Bertie Marie Lacy Culver of Rossville died Monday, Feb. 13, 2012. She was 91.
She was born in Henagar, Ala., to the late James Thomas and Irene Francis Wright Lacy. She had resided in Rossville since 1957. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church in Rossville and was a former member of New Home Baptist Church in Henagar, Ala. She had worked at Rivoli Mills and Ed Mann Hosiery Mills. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed playing the piano and loved her family.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Brady Culver; a sister, Stella Mae Pair; and a brother, William Amos Lacy.

Evangelist Charles Edward Stoker of Rossville died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at his home with his family by his side. He was 72.
He was born on Oct. 1, 1939 in Menlo, to the late Martha Lucille Vaughn and Artie Lewis Stoker. Rev. Stoker traveled extensively, preaching the gospel and saving souls for the Lord.

Paul M. Silver of the Chattanooga, Tenn., area died Monday, Feb. 6, 2012. He was 76.
He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia area and was in the 1952 class of City High School. He worked for Peerless Mills and Rossville Yarn Processing and was retired from Barnet Southern in Cartersville. Mr. Silver had been in the apartment and housing rental business for the past 35 years. He was a former member and deacon of Park City Baptist Church and a member of Elizabeth Terrace Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Ester Silver; and two sisters, Christine Silver and Patricia McAfee.

Dave Brotherton, 75, Lakemont
Dave Brotherton of Lakemont died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, with his wife Faye and niece and nephew Laura Beth and T.J. by his side. He was 75.
He graduated from Rossville High School in 1954 and is a member of the Rossville High Sports Hall of Fame. Dave was a devoted father and husband, a dedicated Georgia bulldog fan, an avid collector of pottery, a gospel music aficionado and enjoyed playing golf in his retirement years. He was of the Baptist faith and was an ordained deacon.
He was a lifelong educator and worked as teacher, principal, administrator and superintendent of schools. He served as superintendent in Baldwin County, Ga., Tallassee City, Ala., and retired as superintendent in Fayette County, Ga. Dave viewed the education of children as a calling and had a special talent for recognizing potential in young people. Dave mentored many new school superintendents and was a consultant to school systems throughout the region.
Dave always believed in service to the community. Through the years, he acted as a city councilman and volunteer firefighter in Rossville, was a member of the Jaycees and Rotary clubs and, most recently, served on the board of Lakemont Highlands Homeowners association.
He was preceded in death by father and mother, H.L. and Ilda Brotherton; infant son, Joseph Lee Brotherton; and brother, Tom Brotherton.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Faye McKay Brotherton; the pride and joy of his life, daughter Anita Kay Brotherton; brother and sister-in-law, H. She was a longtime member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Chickamauga, where she was the librarian and took care of the nursery for 34 years.

Paul E. Coffey, 84, Ringgold
Rev. Paul E. Coffey of Ringgold died Feb. 7, 2012. He was 84.
Paul was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tenn., and later moved his family to the Atlanta area where he lived until 2005. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II ,stationed on Destroyer Escort USS Robert F. Keller DE-419. His ship was 45 miles out when the atomic bomb was dropped over Hiroshima, and he was one of the last living witnesses to the explosion. He retired in 1971 from Western Union Telephone Company where he worked for many years. He was ordained in the Church of the Nazarene in 1960 and pastored several Nazarene and Wesleyan churches. His first pastorate was the Wilder’s Tower Church of the Nazarene in Chickamauga Park. Other churches included South Trion, Louisville, Hortense Wesleyan, Covington First Wesleyan, Atlanta First Wesleyan, and Little Rock, Wesleyan. Paul will always be loved and sadly missed by his wife and family, his former church members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dock C. and Elizabeth Coffey; brothers; Robert and Charles Coffey; and sisters, Myrtle Kittle and Betty McEntire.

Loma was a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, American Nurse Credentialing Center and Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Cloriece Patty Teems; and sister, Joan Teems.

Carol Dean Ferguson McBryar of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Monday, Feb. 6, 2012. She was 63.
She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was a member of Kensington Church of God in Kensington. She worked most of her life caring for children and was a special friend to everyone that she met. She was a prayer warrior and was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, who will be sadly missed by all that knew her.

Betty Sue Mitchell Stephenson of LaFayette died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012, at her residence. She was 90.
A native of Summerville, she has lived in the LaFayette area for the past 57 years where she was a member of LaFayette First Baptist Church and was formerly of Rome.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Henry Stephenson; parents, Reneau and Mary New Mitchell; son, Glenn Stephenson; daughter-in-law, Susan Stephenson; son-in-law, John W. Dennison; brother, Buford Mitchell and sister-in-law, Lucille Mitchell.

Bennette “Earl” Plemons of Ringgold died Friday, Feb. 3, 2012. He was 92.
He was born in Ringgold to the late George and Emily Plemons, and retired from Combustion after 35 years of service. Earl was a member of New Liberty Baptist Church where he was a Sunday school teacher.
He was also preceded in death by his brothers, C.L. and Euless Plemons, sister, Myrtle Shields, and daughter, Glenda Wellchance.

She was born in Wallaceville, to the late Clyde Lee and Mae Belle Hickey Butcher. She had resided most of her life in the Chattanooga/northwest Georgia area. She was a homemaker and attended Oakwood Baptist Church in Chickamauga.

Dianne Suttle Houston of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012. She was 65.
She was a member of Greater Saint Mary Missionary Baptist Church and the widow of the late Robert Houston.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Trin Villa Suttle Sr. and Frances Nichols Suttle; sister, Betty Burse; four brothers, Robert Suttle, Wallace Suttle, Trinn Suttle Jr. and Jimmy Suttles.

L. Leon Hardin, 76, Texas
L. Leon Hardin, a long time resident of Anderson County, Texas, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012. He was 76.
He was born to Archie Floyd and Lillie Beatrice Eggleston Hardin in Big Spring, Texas, on July 3, 1935. Leon married his “one and only true love, his soul mate,” Betty Matheny Grandstaff in Odessa, Texas, on Dec. 20, 1971. He held several jobs in many fields during his working years, including time as a cross-country trucker, oil field worker, security officer and locksmith. Leon also had many hobbies. He loved working with leather goods, collecting model semi-trucks and building model airplanes.
Leon was a proud Marine veteran, having served with the 1st Marine Division in Korea, at the 38th Parallel. He was also a longtime member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Leon’s strong Christian faith and daily talks with the Lord sustained him during his battle with cancer.
Survivors include his children, Bob Hardin (Jonni) of Mead, Wash., Trace Hardin of Mead, Wash., Dana Meeks (Greg) of Elgin, Texas, Gary Hardin of Amarillo, Texas; stepdaughters, Kay Lynn Lowery (Harold) of Georgetown, Texas, Karolyn Mangan (Lyndall) of Comanche, Texas; sisters, Mollie Jeanne Hardin of Odessa, Texas, Barbara Brooks of Odessa, Texas, Ruby Hardin of Ringgold; brothers, John Delbert Hardin (Linda) of Palestine, Texas, Lynn Hardin (D) of Lipan, Texas; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nine nieces and nephews; 11 great-nieces and -nephews; three aunts; one uncle; lots of cousins and many wonderful friends; a very special friend, Laura Gutowski, and Lovey, his faithful dachshund and longtime companion.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Betty ‘Babe’ Hardin; his son, Jerry Leon Hardin; parents, Floyd and Bea Hardin; and brothers, Odell Hardin and Floyd ‘Pete’ Hardin.

Amy Parker Bailey of LaFayette died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2012. She was 91.
She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and the Young at Heart of Corinth Baptist Church. She was also a member of the LaFayette Chapter Jazzy Butterflies Red Hat society. She retired after 10 years from the LaFayette Police Department School Patrol. Mrs. Bailey enjoyed cooking and working in her flower garden.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard W. Bailey; grandsons, Terry Lee Bailey, Roy Travis Bailey; and parents, A.W. and Tinnie Cummins Parker.

Kathryn Brown Poteet, 74, Tunnel Hill
Kathryn Brown Poteet of Tunnel Hill died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012. She was 74.
Kathryn is best remembered for her work as a seamstress. Many young girls from Ringgold, Fort Oglethorpe and Rossville will remember her for creating uniforms for the Lakeview drill team, prom dresses, and pageant gowns during their high school years (1970's to 1990’s). Her talent and passion were not limited to beautiful clothing but were seen in many area homes, which she decorated with a craftsman’s touch, from painting to wallpaper and beyond. Her faith in Christ was evident from an early age, being a longtime member of Keith Baptist Church, which she attended from childhood until illness in 1994.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben E. Poteet; parents, William “Bill” and Eula Floyd Brown; and three brothers, Robert, Eddie and Floyd Brown.

Kevin “Tony” Anthony Baughman of Ringgold died Friday, Jan. 27, 2012. He was 18.
He was born in Little Rock, Ark. He had lived in the Ringgold area for the past 13 years, attended Ridgedale Baptist Church and was a senior at Silverdale Baptist Academy. Tony loved his siblings, loved life, loved cars and loved the beach more than anywhere else! He was a member of his high school soccer team for five years and a member of the Chattanooga United Football Club.

Charles R. Cook Sr., 87, Rossville
Charles R. Cook Sr. of Rossville died on Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, in the care of Hospice of Chattanooga. She was 87.
Mr. Cook was a north Georgia resident for most of his life and was a member of Brainerd United Methodist Church. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served with the Photo Intelligence Center as a draftsman and photographer. Mr. Cook retired from T.V.A. with 42 years of service as printing manager. He was a 50-year member of the Grand Lodge of Georgia, the Rossville Lodge No.397 F&AM, and the Chattanooga Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Kattye Agee Cook, and parents, Everett Cook and Linnie Cook Spires.

Brenda Juanita Tate Foster of LaFayette died Friday, Jan. 27, 2012. She was 69.
She had lived in the north Georgia area for most of her life and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Villanow. She graduated from the University of Chattanooga and had retired from the Walker County Court Clerk’s office, where she worked with Judge Billy Shaw Abney and Bill McDaniel for more than 20 years. She had also retired from Mike Herndon’s State Farm agency after more than 10 years of service. She was a loving and devoted mother and wife, who will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William “Bill” and Tommie Tate.

A native of Cleveland, Tenn., she had lived in Rossville for many years. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church where she was a choir member, Sunday school teacher, and a member of the Homemakers. She retired from the Personality Shop in Rossville with over 30 years of service. In her retirement she was a longtime volunteer for the Hutcheson Medical Center Auxiliary. Her passions in life were God, family and traveling.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl J. McKay; son, Tommy McKay; one brother; and two sisters.

Graveside service: Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m. at Mount Olive Cemetery on Lookout Mountain. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Arrangements: W.L. Wilson and Sons Funeral Home, Fort Oglethorpe.
Oleeta Lynn Rodgers, 45, LaFayette
Oleeta Lynn Rodgers of LaFayette died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012. She was 45.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. She worked with the Walker County Tax Assessors Office for 11 years.
She was preceded in death by parents, LeRoy and Sara Hill; and sister, Sherry Hill.
Survivors include husband, Bobby Rodgers; daughers, Lacie (J.D. Holland) of LaFayette, Ashley (Matthew) Searels of N.C.; sister, Donna Alexander of LaFayette; grandchildren, Riley Smith adn Wyatt Holland; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service: Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. with service conducted by Rev. Steve Bell. Visitation: Wednesday, Feb. 1, from 5 p.m. until time of service. Arrangements: Wallis-Wilbanks Funeral Home, LaFayette.
