Rita Irene Gordy Gilbert, 45, Ringgold
Rita Irene Gordy Gilbert of Ringgold died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at her home with her family beside her. She was 45.
Rita was born to the late Roy T. and Jo Gordy. She was a lifelong resident of the Ringgold area where she was a member of the Ringgold First Baptist Church.
Survivors include by her husband of 42 years, Robert “Bob” Gilbert of Ringgold; two sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Christina Gilbert of Ringgold and Todd and Susan Gilbert of Ringgold; four grandchildren, Cade and Callie Gilbert and Marcus and Mackenzie Knight; brother, Roy S. Gordy of Ringgold; and several nieces and nephews.

Franklin Lamar Henderson, 65, LaFayette
Franklin Lamar Henderson of LaFayette died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009. He was 65.
He was born in Chattooga County to the late John Gordon and Dessie Mae Brock Henderson. He had lived in Chicago, Ill. and Lavonia, Mich., and resided for most of his life in northwest Georgia. His last job had been with the Salvation Army. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and hunting. He attended Faith Worship Center in LaFayette.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Barbara Prince, Martha Nation, Polly Vaughn; brother, Alfred Henderson; and a nephew, Gary Wayne Prince.
Survivors include his daughters, Sharon Queen and Frankie Young, and son, Lamar Henderson, all of Rock Spring; six grandchildren; sisters, Charlotte Arnold of LaFayette, Betty Jenkins and June Angel, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; brother, J.G. Henderson of Chickamauga; several nieces and nephews.

Annie Ruth Atkins of Trion died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009. She was 79.
She was a member of the Gospel Light Christian Church.

Thomas Nelson Parris Jr. of Chattanooga died Friday, Oct. 23, 2009. He was 55.
He was born Feb. 8, 1954, in Chattanooga to the late Thomas Nelson Parris Sr. and Patricia Kathleen Parris. He worked as an engineer with Aztec Industries for 19 years, and attended Lookout Valley Church of the Nazarene.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Allen Parris; grandparents, Jesse Clifton Parris and Verla Mae Parris, and William and Vera Morgan. Survivors include two sisters, Teresa and Kathy Parris.

Brenda Annette Gatlin, 57, Lookout Valley
Brenda Annette Gatlin of Lookout Valley died Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at a local hospital. She was 57.
She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, was of the Baptist faith, and retired in 1999 from Duff Brothers as a Compliance Coordinator with 22 years of service. She was a member of the Cherokee Tribe of North East Alabama and her Cherokee name was Standing Deer. Her passions in life were her family, enjoying the outdoors, camping and canoeing, as well as reading. Brenda was a loving and giving person who will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Gatlin; mother, Marlene Little; and sister, Karen Walker.
Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Lebron “Butch” Gatlin, former Marine Sergeant and Vietnam Vet-eran; four children, Annette (Darian) Barnes of Bryant, Ala., Eric Lebron Gatlin of Hixson, Tenn., Laura (Jerry) Leonard of Rossville, and Rachel Lynn Gatlin of Chattanooga; father, Ellis “Bill” Little of Chickamauga; two broth-ers, David Little and Gary Little of Huntsville, Ala.; half sister, Linda Jo Little of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; mother-in-law, Eller Elizabeth “Betty” Ellis of Fort Oglethorpe; eight grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

Clarence L. Fox, 83, Rossville
Clarence L. Fox of Rossville passed away Monday, Oct. 26, 2009 in a local hospital. He was 83.
A native and lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia area, Mr. Fox was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army Air Force. He retired from Combustion Engineering with over 30 years of service. He was an avid golfer where he was a member of the Battlefield Golf and Country Club, and he also loved his garden that he grew every year.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Fox; and daughter, Susie Fox.
Survivors include his daughter, Vickie Fox of Rossville; two brothers, Clyde Fox of Soddy Daisy and Donald Fox of Colorado; and several nieces and nephews.

Steven L. Rogers of Rossville died Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, in a local hospital. He was 49.
He was a lifelong resident of north Georgia and a member of Rossville First Baptist Church. Mr. Rogers was a graduate of Rossville High School and was formerly employed with Wal-Mart.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Rogers; brother, Curtis Rogers; sister, Lisa Rogers; and grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Cornett and Mr. & Mrs. Samuel Rogers.

Ella Burton McLaurin Brantham of Rossville died Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, in a local hospital. She was 82.
She was born on August 18, 1927 in Clinton, N.C. She had resided in Goldsboro, N.C., and Piedmont, S.C., and lived in Rossville at the time of her death. She attended Oakwood Baptist Church in Chickamauga.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Jerry Johnson Brantham.

Coleman Frederick Burroughs, 58, Ringgold
Coleman Frederick Burroughs of Ringgold died Friday, Oct. 23, 2009 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 58.
He was a graduate of the Brainerd High School class of 1969, and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1981. He also received his master’s and educational specialist degrees in administration and supervision from Jacksonville State in Jacksonville, Ala. in 1993. He began his teaching and coaching career at Lakeview Middle School for 7 years and followed his career path to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School for 4 years. He served as an administrator for 7 years at Ringgold Middle School and as principal of Ringgold Elementary School for 6 years. He finished his career as director of student services for the Catoosa County school system for the last 4 years.
During his career as a teacher, coach and administrator, he received numerous awards, honors, and certifica-tions. He was a member of the Ringgold United Methodist Church and attended the Seekers Sunday school class. Coleman Burroughs’ life was filled with selfless acts of Christian service and will be remembered well by his fam-ily, the people he worked with and the children and parents of the Catoosa County school system whom he served.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Susan Putnam Burroughs; parents, Virgil and Azalea Burroughs; brothers, Bill Burroughs, Richard Burroughs and Bob Burroughs; and a sister Doris (Bennie) Cuzzort.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Fleming Burroughs; sons, Andrew F. Burroughs, Mark C. (Heather) Burroughs, Travis A. Lane, Graham A. Lane, both of Nashville; and David M. Lane; sisters, Bettye (Carroll) Parker and Barbara (Bud) Lindsey.

Betty June Eichhorn of Fort Oglethorpe died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009. She was 75.

Wynelle Tollison Roberson of LaFayette (West Armuchee community) died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, at her home. She was 89.
She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, vacation Bible school teacher and served on various committees.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joe Roberson Sr.

Angela Denise Shaver of Rossville died Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009. She was 46.
She had lived in the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas for most of her life and was a member of Cloud Springs Baptist Church. She was employed with the United States Postal Service, Flintstone Office, as a clerk for more than 21 years, and sold Mary Kay and Home Interior products. She was a loving wife, mother, and grand-mother who will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Virginia Jo Johnson; and niece, Heather Nicole McIntire.

Gene Herschel Middleton of Ringgold died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009. He was 65.
He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas and was a member of Covenant Baptist Church in Red Bank.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lola May Middleton; two brothers, Jimmy and Frank Mid-dleton; and two sisters, Gladys Dyer and Louise Crowe.
Survivors include five children, Randy Middleton, Daryl Middleton both of Rossville, Sandy Driver of Fort Oglethorpe, Cheryl Middleton of Rossville, and Rita Middleton of Birchwood, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Joseph Driver, Christopher Driver, and Brandon Suarez; niece and caretaker, Donna Major; sister-in-law, Brenda Middleton; neph-ews, Brian and Terry Middleton; and several other nieces and nephews.

Freda Scott Williams of Fort Oglethorpe died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, in a local hospital. She was 77.
She was a lifelong resident of Fort Oglethorpe and a member of New Manna Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Margie Rust Scott; husband, William C. Williams; brother, Buddy Scott; sisters, Ethelene White and Tiny Garner.

Robert A. England of Soddy-Daisy died Friday, Oct. 16, 2009. He was 63.

Edna Earl Jackson, 74, LaFayette
Edna Earl Jackson of LaFayette died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009, at her residence. She was 74.
She was a lifelong resident of the LaFayette and Rossville area, had worked as a waitress at Lakeside Restaurant for over 30 years, and had also worked as a cook at the Walker County Jail when Sheriff Ralph Jones was in office. LaFayette residents will recognize her from her many visits at yard sales in the area. Mrs. Jackson always thought of others before herself and will truly be missed by all that knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Earl Jackson; and parents, Winfred and Mary Barrett.
Survivors include her sons and spouses, Stanley and Lavaughn Bettis of Fla., Robbie and Angie Bettis of Fla., Winfred and Marie Jackson of LaFayette, Walter and Zina Jackson of LaFayette; sister and brother-in-law, Nan and Chuck of Biloxi, Miss.; five grandchildren; several great grandchildren, nephews and nieces.

Albert Lynn Winston, 84, Mt. Vernon
Albert Lynn Winston Sr. of the Mt. Vernon Community died Saturday Oct. 17, 2009. He was 84.
Mr. Winston was born July 9, 1925, son of the late Percy and Nettie Barker Winston. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was retired from the Chattanooga Glass Co.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Giles Wilkie Winston; sons and daughters-in-law, Al-bert Lynn (Becky) Winston Jr., Paul L. (Carolyn) Winston Sr., Tommy L. Frances Irene Clark Edwards of Ringgold died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at a local nursing home. She was 88.
She was a resident of the north Georgia area for most of her life and was a former em-ployee of Salem Carpet where she had worked for 20 years. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Daniel Edwards; parents, Robert and Elsie Yarbrough Clark; three sisters, Evelyn Bomar, Marie Perkins, and Louise Vaughn; and four brothers, Columbus Clark, William “Tech” Clark, Lucius Clark and Skeet Clark.

James Clyde “Jake” Williams, 81, East Ridge
James Clyde “Jake” Williams of East Ridge died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, in a local hos-pital. He was 81.
He was born June 28, 1928 in Spiro, Okla. In 1935 his family moved back to the Flintstone community where his great-grandparents settled in the early 1800’s. Jake was educated in the public schools of Rossville and joined the U.S. Navy in 1945. Following his service to his country, he graduated from Edmonson School of Business and later retired from DuPont following 38 years of service. Jake was a member of East Ridge Presbyterian Church and the fellowship Sunday School Class and he was a lifetime member of the Allemande Hall where he loved western square dancing. As a great lover of golf, Jake taught golf lessons for many years in the Walker County Schools’ “Super Saturday,” and he was a volunteer with Memorial’s Auxiliary for over twenty years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Jackson Williams and Helen Marie Wallace Williams; and his only sister, Florence Anna Hoskins; and brother-in-law, Ray L. Hoskins.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Joyce Hoskins Williams; niece, Anna Marie Hoskins Chambers Horne (Tim); great nieces, Jennifer (Tommy) Duffy, and Amy Renee Chambers, who brought lots of love to Jake’s life; great nephew, Mark (Tami) Chambers; great great niece and nephews, Savannah Rose, Sienna Reese Chambers, and Conner Duffy; other nieces and nephews that he loved very much are Cathy and Steve Lawson, Linda Joy and O’Henry Porter and Hal Wilson Jr.; very dear lifelong friends, J.W. and Virginia Dodd and their families.

Sara Frances Watkins, 64, Chattanooga
Sara Frances “Granny” Watkins of Chattanooga died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009. She was 64.
She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and was of the Baptist faith. She had worked for many years as a cashier at convenience stores in the Chattanooga area. She enjoyed watching Nascar and Tennessee football while being the family instigator, but most of all she was an Elvis fan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Crawford Elmo Watkins Sr.; parents, Harry and Eva Swihart; daughter, Janet Ann Willerson; brother, William Babb.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Eva and Robert Hunter of Calhoun; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmie and Tonya Mathely of Ringgold; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Lowrance Manley died Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, at Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital in Demopolis. She was 64.

Blanche Mulkey Shelton of Rossville died Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, in a local health facility. She was 90.

J.B. Millard, 90, Chattanooga
J.B. Millard of Chattanooga died Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at a local hospital. He was 90.
He was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, had attended Charity Baptist Church, was an avid Braves fan, and also enjoyed fishing. As a young man, Mr. Millard boxed with the Golden Gloves in Chattanooga.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Millard; two sons, Wylie Tallent and Randy Millard; and two brothers, Archie and Lebron Millard.
Survivors include his daughter, Judy (Larry) Teague of Dumfries, Va.; son, Ardell (Charlotte) Millard of Georgetown, Tenn.; daughter-in-law, Lisa Tallent of Chattanooga; seven grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ella Mae Maynor Whistenant of Chickamauga died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at her home. She was 84.
She was a lifelong resident of the north Georgia area and was of the Baptist faith. She retired from the textile industry in 1982 and enjoyed her days talking on the phone and helping her neighbors.
She is preceded in death by her husband, William Ernest Whistenant; parents, Poppa and Gracie Maynor; three brothers; and three sisters.

Mickey Norman Hope, 80, Rossville
Mickey Norman Hope of Rossville died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at his home. He was 80.
He was born in Chattanooga to the late Jesse and Velma Hope. Mickey retired from Mueller after 30 years of service there. A special thanks to all his caregivers, and Hutcheson Hospice.
He was preceded in death by a son, and wife, Dora Jean Hope.

Michael L. Mahan, 30, Tucson
Michael L. Mahan of Tucson, Ariz. died on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, in an automobile ac-cident. He was 30.
Michael was originally from Fort Oglethorpe and attended Lakeview High School. He was a member of the East Ridge and Catoosa County Fire Departments for five years. He re-ceived Firefighter of the Year in 1998 and was employed with Gas City at the time of his passing. He was a member of New Life Baptist Church in Rossville.
He was preceded in death by his father, C.J. Mahan Sr.; grandparents, Susie and Roscoe Mahan; friend Alfred Ramsey; and two uncles, John and Calvin Mahan.
Survivors include his loving wife, Crystal Mahan; two children, son, Dakota Gipson, 8; and daughter, Angelita Mahan, 6, all of Tucson, Ariz.; mother, Darlene Mahan of Chattanooga; brother, C.J. Mahan Jr. of Rossville; grandmother, Dorothy Ramsey of Chattanooga; three nephews, Jimmy Songer, Brandon Morales, both of Rossville, and Gene Songer of Benson, Ariz.; one niece, Genessa Songer of Benson, Ariz.; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Michael will be missed by his family and friends.

Dorothy Drew Holland Preston of Ringgold died Saturday Oct. 17, 2009, at the home of her granddaughter. She was 90.
She was a native of Dekalb County, Ala., a daughter of the late Will and Maude West Holland. She was retired from the Wiser Lock Co. after several years of service.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Preston.
