Eric Lebron Phillips, 62, LaFayette

Eric Lebron Phillips of LaFayette died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at his residence. He was 62.

He was born on Oct., 1947, in Walker County. He was the son of the late Wilburn Floyd and Rita Lorene Wofford Phillips. He was a truck driver for Jones and Jones Trucking and Logging, and a veteran of the U.S. Army who served in Vietnam.

Survivors include his wife, Lenda Saine; daughters, Erica Phillips of Summerville; Tabitha Hamby (Jerry Field-ing) of LaFayette, Kristi Reed of Pensacola, Fla.; sons, Jeff (April) Phillips of Summerville, Kenny (Bonnie) Phillips, Terry Saine of LaFayette; sister, Nancy Joe (Billy) Warrant of Summerville; 11 grandchildren.

Mary Dunwoody Visage of LaFayette died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009. She was 83.

Nellie Ray Partee of LaFayette died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009. She was 80.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Partee.

William Harrold Fuson, 75, Fort Oglethorpe

William Harrold Fuson of Fort Oglethorpe died Monday, Nov. 9, 2009. He was 75.

He was born to the late Will and Alline Scott on June 28, 1934. He was a member of St. James Methodist Church, former owner/operator of Rite-Way Pest Control, former mayor and city councilman of Fort Oglethorpe, the former commander of the Power Squadron, and an avid golfer.

He was preceded in death by his son, William “Butch” Fuson.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Fuson of Fort Oglethorpe; six children and spouses, Becky (Richard) Carter of Texas, Sheree (Roy) Milsap and Danny Fuson of Chattanooga, Michael (Pam) Fuson of Spring City, Sheri-Lahn (Michael) Webster-Mount of Ringgold, and Alan Webster of Fort Oglethorpe; sister, Doris (Dale) White of LaFayette; cousin, Fred (Thero) Fuson of Ooltewah; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Jeff Haswell, 45, Lookout Valley

Jeff Haswell of Lookout Valley died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at his residence. He was 45.

He was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, where he was a member of the Tiftonia Church of God and had worked with Stone Services as a saw man for five years. He was an avid NASCAR fan, Tennesse Vols fan, and me-chanic.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Frankie E. Haswell.

Survivors include his wife, Billie Jo Haswell; daughters, Corrie Haswell and April McFalls, both of Chattanooga; father and step-mother, Lester and Joan Haswell of Rossville; three brothers, Lester Haswell Jr., John Paul Haswell, and Tim Haswell, all of Chattanooga; sister, Nancy Haswell of Chattanooga; two grandchildren; and sev-eral nieces and nephews.

Alvin Vance Suttles of LaFayette died Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at Heritage LaFayette Health Care Center. He was 79.

He was a member of Happy Home Baptist Church and was retired from Mueller Foundry.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Perry Suttles Jr. and Elzora W. Young Suttles; wife, Mary Ruth Echols Suttles; five brothers, and one sister.

Paula Lee Bulman, 54, Ringgold

Paula Lee Bulman of Ringgold died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009. She was 54.

She was a lifelong resident of north Georgia and graduated from Rossville High School in 1974. She was a member of Parkway Baptist Church. She enjoyed singing in the choir at church, visiting the Smokey Mountains and being with her family.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Paul L. and Ramie Irene Brown and Leroy and Nettie Bell Cox.

Survivors include her husband, David Bulman; parents, William and Joyce Brown; daughter and son-in-law, Tisa and Michael Ledford of Ft. Riley, Kan.; son, Tommy Bulman of Ringgold; brother Frank Brown of Whitwell; her pride and joy granddaughters, Alexis Marie Ledford and Shannon Starr Ledford; and several nieces and nephews.

Madison Cheyenne Faye Dial died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009. She was the infant daughter of Tommy Sengaphy and Tabatha Marie Dial.

Claude A. Hawthorne, 82, East Ridge

Claude A. Hawthorne of East Ridge died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, in a local hospital. He was 82.

A native of Dekalb County, Ala., he had lived most of his life in the Chattanooga area and retired from Mueller Corporation with forty years of service. He was a member and deacon at South Seminole Baptist Church and enjoyed his Sunday School Class and all the missions of the church. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was a 50 year mason with the East Ridge Lodge 755 F&AM.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mary Ruth Hawthorne; son, Stanley Hawthorne; daughter, Melissa Hawthorne all of East Ridge; grandchildren, Shelby (Luke) Hampton of Alamenda, Calif., Megan Hawthorne of Hixson, and Christopher Murray of Lawrenceville; great-grandchildren, Chance and Lindsey Tant; several loving nieces and nephews.

Samuel “Sammy” James, 53, Rossville

Samuel “Sammy” James of Rossville died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009. He was 53.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Chattanooga and north Georgia, Sammy was a 1974 graduate of East Ridge High School and attended Chattanooga State. He and his wife, Vikki, were owners and operators of Super Tan USA in the Chattanooga area for twenty-one years and he was the creator of Black Sun high-performance tanning lamps. He was employed with Modern Woodmen of America as an agent for many years, was past-president of the Rossville Exchange Club, and was a member of South Seminole Baptist Church and the Doberman Pinscher Club. Sammy was loved by all that knew him and will be missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank James and Laura James Ford.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Victoria “Vikki” Wells James; sisters, Sue Moore of Red Bank and Carolyn Jenkins of Chattanooga; five nephews, two nieces, and a host of friends are left to cherish his memory.

Keith Eldon Shinault, Rossville

Keith Eldon Shinault of Rossville died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009.

He served in WWII in the US Army Air Corp and became a POW after his plane was shot down over Germany. After returning home from the war he maintained residence in Miami, Fla. for approximately forty years before returning to Rossville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Frazier Shinault and Vivian (Pilkington) Shinault; sister, Audrey Godfrey; and nephew Barry Godfrey.

Survivors include his niece, Patty Gale Godfrey; nephew, John Godfrey; and several relatives in Bluefield West Virginia.

Norman “Smitty” Eugene Smith of Rossville died Nov. 8, 2009, at his residence. He was 75.

He was a lifelong resident of the north Georgia, Chattanooga area and a former employee of Capital Toyota where he worked for 36 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence “C.O.” and Belle Louise Tinker Smith; two daughters, Carolyn Newbille and Miranda Smith.

Survivors include four daughters, Norma Redmon of Chattanooga, Mary Pavelka of Corpus Christi, Texas, Kathy McKinney of Rossville, and Martha Johnson of Chattanooga; three sisters, Charlotte Crump of Fort Oglethorpe, Mildred Woody of Chattanooga; ten grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Bettye Greene Beaver, 93, Ringgold

Bettye Greene Beaver of Ringgold died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at her residence. She was 93.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy, who passed away 20 years earlier on the same day; her parents, Albert & Maggie Greene; her sisters, Edna Long, Nell Phillips; brothers, Mack & Chevius Greene; and daughter, Dr. Mary Guy Beaver.

Survivors include her daughter, Joan (Jim) Cutcher of Ringgold; sister, Charlie Steffey of Indiana; grandchil-dren, Dabney and Corey Cutcher.

Guy and Bettye married in 1949, moving to one of the old post military officer’s homes on Barnhart Circle, where they resided for 10 years, then moved to a farm in Ringgold. She and Guy co-owned and operated the Beaver Refrigeration and Air Company for 40 years. She was a member of Newman Springs and Ringgold Methodist churches, where she was active in many senior group activities. In her spare time, she was an avid quilter and knitted many afghans that she gave away to various charities and relatives.

Letha Nell Tussey Foshee, 83, East Ridge

Letha Nell Tussey Foshee of East Ridge died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009. She was 83.

She was a native of Jackson County, Ky. and had settled her family in the East Ridge area. She was of the Church of God faith, was a successful beautician of Letha’s Beauty Shop for more than 45 years and was a prominent member of her society. She also enjoyed gardening and cooking.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and six brothers.

Survivors include four daughters, Susan White of Chattanooga, Debbie Moore of Ringgold, Salli High of Menlo, and Jill Foshee of Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Kelly, Amy, Todd, Chelsea, Sydney, Shari, Blair, Kayla, Caleb, and Brandon Addison; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Louise Goodwin Hart, 75, Chickamauga

Dorothy Louise Goodwin Hart of Chickamauga died Nov. 6, 2009, at her residence surrounded by her family. She was 75.

A resident of the Chickamauga area for the past 40 years she was formerly of Chattanooga, Tenn. and was a for-mer employee of Hutcheson Home Health where she worked for 6 years.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Billy Ray Bankston; second husband, Baxter Boyd Hart; parents, Thomas Goodwin and Idella Sullivan; daughter, Regina Faye Shelby; granddaughter, Jamie Bankston, and three brothers, Edwin Goodwin, Donald Goodwin and Stanley “Whizzie” McKinney.

Oliver B. Stone, 74, Flintstone

Oliver B. Stone of Flintstone died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009. He was 74.

He was a lifelong resident of the north Georgia area and was a member of South Rossville Baptist Church for more than 21 years. He was previously employed with U.S. Soil Pipe as an iron pourer for more than 10 years and loved going to church. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver & Beatrice Stone; sisters, Jewell Arrington and Juanita Sprouse and brother, Larry Stone.

Survivors include his loving wife of more than 56 years, Kathleen Stone of Flintstone; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Bill Jones of Flintstone, and Loretta and Mark McDonald of Chickamauga; brothers, Tommy Stone and G.W. Walter Jackson White, 82, Rossville

Walter Jackson White of Rossville died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009. He was 82.

He was born in Chattanooga to the late Thomas and Marietta White. Walter served his country in WWII, in the U.S. Army Paratroopers, and received a Purple Heart. He retired from Crane Co. after 40 years of service as an Inspector.

Survivors include his loving wife, Mildred White; children, Glen White, Raymond White, Ralph Compton and Marlene Lee, all of Rossville; siblings, Joseph White of Houston, Texas, Ruby Garner of Fort Oglethorpe; 10 grand-children; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Betty Ann Whitfield of Rossville died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009. She was 77.

She had lived in the north Georgia area for most of her life and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon E. Whitfield; two brothers, Henry and Glen Rucks; and sis-ter, Roberta Whitfield.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Teresa (Ralph) Byrum of Ooltewah, Tenn.; sons and daughters-in-law, Bob (Pam) Whitfield of East Ridge, Tenn. and Randall (Nancy) Whitfield of Tiftonia, Tenn.; brother, Harrie Lee Rucks of Rossville; two sisters, Eugenia Johnson of Alabama and Marjorie James of Dalton; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren, one great great grandchild; special friends, Hazel, Charlie, and Gary Floyd and Cristy and Dillion Hunt; several nieces and nephews.

William Allen Davidson, 48, Chickamauga

William Allen Davidson of Chickamauga died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009. He was 48.

He was born in Chattanooga on August 28, 1961. He was of the Baptist faith, a former 20-year employee of Shaw Industries who loved riding motorcycles, especially the toy run. He was also an avid fisherman.

Survivors include his wife, Mitzi Davidson; parents, Bill Davidson and Margaret Hale; five children and spouses, Kane Farley, Jeff Davidson, Kyle Steele, Joseph and Jennifer Davidson, Jeremy and Christian Davidson; two sisters, Kay Wright and Karen Morgan; three brothers, Doug Davidson, Clay Longworth, and Shawn Davidson; six grand-children, Tara, Abbi, Phoenix, Austin, Levi, and Zack.

Service: Monday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial: Chattanooga National Cemetery. Visita-tion: Sunday, Nov. 8, from 5-9 p.m. and Monday, Nov. 9, prior to service. Rita Irene Gordy Gilbert, 64, Ringgold

Rita Irene Gordy Gilbert of Ringgold died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at her home with her family beside her. She was 64.

Rita was born to the late Roy T. and Jo Gordy. She was a lifelong resident of the Ringgold area where she was a member of the Ringgold First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Robert “Bob” Gilbert of Ringgold; two sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Christina Gilbert of Ringgold and Todd and Susan Gilbert of Ringgold; four grandchildren, Cade and Callie Gilbert and Marcus and Mackenzie Knight; brother, Roy S. Gordy of Ringgold; and several nieces and neph-ews.

Eunice Dilbeck Keown of LaFayette died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009. She was 88.

She was a member of Naomi Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Newton Keown Sr.; son, Charles Newton Keown Jr.

Survivors include a daughter, Cynthia Annette Keown; son, Marlin Crosby Keown; eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren; nephews, Terry and Steve Dilbeck.

Tracy Darlene Payne, 43, Dalton

Tracy Darlene Payne of Dalton died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009. She was 43.

She spent her time enjoying the company of her grandchildren. When not spending time with them, she enjoyed dancing and listening to music with her friends and family. She was a daughter, sister, mom, aunt, and a wonderful friend to all. We all love and miss Tracy very much.

Matthew “Todd” Wooten, 27, Rock Spring

Matthew “Todd” Wooten of Rock Spring died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009. He was 27.

He was born in Fort Oglethorpe and had been a lifelong resident of Walker County. He was a graduate of the Class of 2000 from Ridgeland High School. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Ringgold, Georgia and Wal-Mart in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He enjoyed greeting everyone he met with a smile, listening to music, watching Major League baseball and NFL football. He was a member of Mission Glenn Baptist Church in Rossville.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sherry Lorena Burrows Wooten.

Survivors include his father, Robert Wooten of Rock Spring; sister; Angela Lynn Gipson of Ill.; brother and sis-ter-in-law, Shaun (Amber) Wooten of Buford; a niece and a nephew, Kayla and Daniel Gipson; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Raymond Alex Vaughn, 67, Rossville

Raymond Alex Vaughn of Rossville died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009. He was 67.

He was a lifelong resident of Rossville and was of the Baptist faith. He retired from Gentry Steel in 2003 after more than 15 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Vaughn; parents; and two brothers.

Survivors include his daughters, Beth Lee and Missy Vaughn of Rossville; son, Alan (Sheila) Vaughn of Rossville; sister, Alice (Jake) Hanshaw of Rossville; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Joel William Barrett, 72, East Ridge

Joel William Barrett of East Ridge died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009. He was 72.

He was born in Texas and moved to the Chattanooga area in 1976. He was a member of Lantana Road Baptist Church in Crossville, Tenn. He retired from Lowe’s in 1997 after working there for more than ten years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Terry Clary and Rocky Barrett; a sister; and a brother.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Barrett; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Paul Frost of Rossville; brothers, Dewayne Barrett and Wilford Barrett; grandchildren, Amanda Gordon and Dustin Frost.

Mona Sue Black, 75, Lookout Valley

Mona Sue Black of Lookout Valley died Friday, Oct. 30, 2009 surrounded by her daughter and caregiver, Susan and loving friends, Sherry and James Gamble at her residence. She was 75.

Mona lived most of her life in the Chattanooga area where she was a Christian and a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church in Cleveland, Tenn. She last attended the Grace Baptist Tabernacle in Lookout Valley and was ministered to in her home by the Lookout Valley Seventh Day Adventist Church. The family would like to give a special thank you to Hospice of Chattanooga for their care during this time as well as the endless and tireless hours of Sherry Gamble.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lillian Gertrude and Frank Reuben Kean; three brothers, Franklin Eugene “Gene” Kean, James Floyd “Snookey” Kean, and Bobby Lee Kean Sr.; and one sister, Betty Buckles.

Survivors include her husband, Rhea Black of Cleveland; daughter, Susan Black of Chattanooga; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mary Ruth Britton, 82, Fort Oglethorpe

Mary Ruth Britton of Fort Oglethorpe died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009. She was 82.

She was born in Walker County to the late William and Valley (Keyes) Cooper. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Fort Oglethorpe and retired from Orange Grove Work Shop after 25 years of service as an Assistant Su-pervisor.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Cooper.

Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Gray of Rossville; siblings, Frances Floyd of Dalton, Charles Cooper of Fort Oglethorpe, Paul Cooper, Lebron Cooper and Toma Sain all of LaFayette, Wanda Huey of Rock Spring; granddaughter Alesa King; great-granddaughter Kala King; special nieces Jessie Paul and Peggy Holleman; many nieces and nephews, and special and devoted friend, Frances Kitchen.

Tom Chester Wittemore, 50, Ringgold

Tom Chester Wittemore of Ringgold died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009. He was 50.

He was born in Ringgold to the late Maynard and Lillian (Rhodes) Whittemore.

Survivors include his companion and life partner of 28 years, James Cantrell; siblings, David (Felicia) Whittemore, Maynard (Wanda) Whittemore all of Ringgold, Mitchell Whittemore of Ellijay, Mary Ann Whittemore, Carol (Earl) Wilson all of Ringgold, Barbara (Jim) Justice of Apison; and many nieces and nephews, cousin, aunts, and uncles.

James (Buck) Cranfield, 73, Ringgold

James Buck Cranfield of Ringgold died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at his residence. He was 73.

He was born January 5, 1936, in Athens, Tenn. James retired from Cobble Company after 47 years of service and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edd and Ollie Mae Cranfield; siblings, Willie Cranfield and Edna Hen-nessee.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Marie Rogers Cranfield; son, James “Rick” (Patty) Cranfield of Ringgold; granddaughters, Carla Hedden, Crystal Cranfield; great-grandchildren, Caleb Cranfield, Talan Cranfield, Tyler Hedden, and Carley Hedden; sisters, Dorothy (Elmer) Swafford of Decatur, Tenn., Emma Lou (Harold) Monroe, Faye (Ronnie) Sneed of Athens, Tenn.; brothers, Kenneth (Mae) Cranfield of Elizabethton, Tenn., Paul (Joyce) Cranfield, Oliver (Juanita) Cranfield, Dallas (Joyce) Cranfield, Kenny (Alice) Cranfield, all of Athens, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews; and many friends and family.

Robert W. Davis, 84, Ringgold

Robert W. Davis of Ringgold died Oct. 30, 2009 in a local hospital. He was 84.

He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia area and a member of Poplar Springs Baptist. Mr. Davis was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Normandy, France in WWII.

He was preceded in death by his son Robert Davis Jr.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ruth Holt Davis; son, Charles E. (Tina) Davis of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., daughter-in-law, Karen J. Margie Longacre, 72, Hixson

Margie Longacre of Hixson died Friday Oct. 30, 2009. She was 72.

She was a retired real estate agent, bookkeeper, wife and mother who enjoyed laughing, fashion and interior decorating.

Survivors include her mother, Mary Crowder; husband, Byron Longacre; children, Karen (Wayne) Aaron, Dan (Lisa) Longacre, and Nancy (Mark) Holland; brother, Curtis Crowder; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Kay Merritt Willingham, 50, Shinbone Valley

Mrs. Kay Merritt Willingham of Shinbone Valley Community died Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at Redmond Regional Medical Center. She was 50.

Mrs. Willingham was born September 29, 1959 in Chickamauga, the daughter of the late Lebron Cecil and Tharon Crowder Merritt. She was a member of the Elizabeth Lee United Methodist Church in Chickamauga. Mrs. Willing-ham was employed for 17 years at Synthetic Industries as an I. T. Supervisor and worked for the past 5 years in the Optics Lab at Hays State Prison. She was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association. She and her hus-band also owned and operated Shinbone Valley Quarter Horses. She graduated from Gordon Lee High School and Dalton College. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Alan Lee Merritt.

Survivors include her husband, Gary Willingham, to whom she was married on December 21, 2001; step-daughter and husband, Angie and Tony White, Lyerly; sister and brother-in-law, Carole and Mike Pinion, West Armuchee; step-grandchildren, Emma White and Zach White; niece and husband, Erin and Chad Roberts; great nieces, Kenley Roberts and Presley Roberts.
