According to the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department:
Doris Marie Smith, 61, of Linda Lane in Rossville was arrested on Monday, May 14, on a charge of burglary.
Smith has been released from jail on bond.
Officers were dispatched to 253 Patterson Ave. just before 6 p.m. in regards to a burglary in progress.
“We received a call from the home owner, who stated that she returned home to find a vehicle in her driveway and someone in her house,” officer Mitchell Moore wrote in the report. “Upon arrival, we stationed ourselves around the house and heard someone inside apparently stepping on items as they neared the front door.”
When Smith opened the front door, she was carrying an armload of items from within the home and was greeted by Lt. Gary McConathy, reports show.
Smith quickly dropped the items she was carrying and was taken into custody without incident.
“Following her arrest, Smith alleged that she had permission from the home owner to be at the property,” Moore said. “This was flatly denied by the victim moments later.”
During the incident, Smith’s vehicle was searched and contained several items that had been taken from within the residence, reports show.
Smith was then transported to the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department where an interview was conducted with a detective before she was transported to Catoosa County jail.
