The 5-foot-9 Lady Grizzly was one four Creekview senior starters who ran rough shot through the Region 7-AAAA Tournament just three months ago, taking the region title by 19 points over perennial power Rome.
Nichelson and her senior counterparts have all signed to play college ball in the fall of 2012. The 26-4 Creekview squad advanced to the state quarterfinals before falling to Southwest Dekalb.
Creekview head coach Roger Nolan said Nichelson is perfect at getting you what you need, when you need it.
“She’s a great kid and very appreciative of everything she gets," he explained. "When she plays, there’s a lot of energy on the floor. I call her the ‘anti-diva.’ No drama. Tell her something you expect one time and that’s what you get every time.”
The double-digit scorer first made her way onto GNTC's radar at the end of her junior year. The Canton native forced overtime against Miller Grove in a GHSA Sweet 16 match-up with a long-range 3-pointer with just seconds to spare.
“It’s my favorite moment from my time here at Creekview,” said Nichelson. “I’m really excited about going to Georgia Northwestern. Coach Williams is a lot like Coach Nolan. You want to play hard for them.”
The Creekview graduate will be one of several new Lady Cats helping fill key voids after the Lady Bobcats made a run to a NJCAA region title and a trip to the National Sweet 16.
“She plays fundamental basketball and goes baseline to baseline all game long,” said Williams. “She plays inside and outside and she’s physical enough to do it. She doesn’t look like it on the outside. But that’s exactly what she is. She’s a gamer.”
Nichelson is the daughter of Michelle and Armando Nava and has one brother, Chris.
“She has worked hard for everything she has earned,” said Mrs. Nava. “She’s interested in getting into a nursing program. Georgia Northwestern has one and now, she gets the chance to go after her career and play basketball at the next level.”
Tryouts and open workouts for the 2012-13 Lady Cats will be posted in the near future on GNTC.edu’s Athletics Page.
