The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is still collecting information on an officer involved shooting that took place late Tuesday evening in which a Fort Oglethorpe police officer shot the suspect during a burglary attempt off Cloud Springs Road.

The suspect, 56-year-old Ronald Lee Boltz, was surrounded by officers while inside the Gateway Antique Mall at 4031 Cloud Springs Road, after being spotting breaking into the complex at approximately 11 p.m., Fort Oglethorpe police chief David Eubanks said.

Boltz attempted to flee the scene with an unidentified object in his hand, at which time a Fort Oglethorpe patrolman fired one shot at Boltz, striking him in the leg.

Boltz was then transported to Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn., for treatment to his non life-threatening injury.

Boltz has since been released from the hospital and was taken into custody by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. He is currently being held without bond, and has a court date set for 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 25.

The name of the patrolman who shot Boltz has not yet been released.

A source close to the investigation has stated that the suspect was shot in the leg after officers saw him reaching for what they believed to be a gun and that he traveled to the location in a rental car.

The police report from the incident has not yet been released as the GBI continues its investigation of the case, which is standard protocol with any officer-involved shooting.

This story will be updated as more details are made available.
