Officers were dispatched to the Sunset Market at 915 Ga. 2 (Battlefield Parkway) about 10:40 p.m. May 21 after the call of a robbery in progress.
“The clerk on duty advised that when he turned the outside lights off, he heard what appeared to be a rock hit-ting the front of the building,” Lt. David Gilbert wrote in the report. “He claimed that he saw one in the parking lot, but did state the although he was closing the store, the front door was unlocked. He then stated that he returned behind the counter to finish his paperwork when he encountered the offender.”
The clerk told police that he heard the robber say, “Hey buddy, give me the money,” and then looked up to see a black handgun pointed at him, reports show.
The clerk said the robber jumped over the counter and told him to lay down on the floor, which he did. He said the robber opened the cash register and stole about $500 from the drawer.
The robber told the clerk to lay on the floor for 15 minutes before getting up, and then fled the scene, reports show.
The clerk described the offender as being tall and slender, wearing a black jacket, and a mask on his face.
Officers secured the scene and performed a scan of the area, but the robber could not be located, and the clerk could not tell which way the robber ran because he was laying on the floor, reports show.
The case was turned over to detective Keith Sewell.
Anyone with information regarding the robbery is encouraged to contact the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department at 706-866-2512.
