Last fall, the Chattanooga Valley Middle School junior varsity football team lit up the scoreboard on its way to an unbeaten season.

Friday night, those players showed their fans what could possibly be in store for this upcoming season on the varsity level.

The Eagles displayed their offensive firepower in front of a packed Eagles Stadium crowd during their Maroon-and-White spring game, combining to rush for 632 yards while adding another 294 through the air, as the White squad held on to win the game, 48-42.

"Based on what the JV team did last year, there's a lot of excitement around here with the school and community," CVMS head coach Nicky Peppers said. "There were a lot of people here tonight for a scrimmage game. I'm excited, the kids are excited, and I think everybody around here is excited for the fall."

The squads were divided equally for the four-quarter game, which was played with 12-minute running-clock quarters.

On the very first play from scrimmage, Markeith Montgomery gave the White team the lead as he raced 70 yards for a touchdown with Marquie Davis providing the 2-point conversion.

And the shootout was on.

The Maroon team answered with a three-play, 70-yard drive punctuated by Blaine Phillips' 43-yard TD scamper and Ivy Boehm's conversion run. The White team countered as quarterback Austin Thompson hit Bryan Crouser for a 60-yard gain off a slant pass before Melik Davis ran it in from 10 yards out and added the conversion.

The Maroon team needed just four plays to respond as a 54-yard jaunt by Phillips set up an 11-yard Boehm-to-Will Hodges touchdown pass. The conversion attempt failed, leaving the White team up 16-14.

Then on the final play of the first quarter, Marquie Davis increased the lead for the White team with a 64-yard TD run. The conversion pushed the lead to 24-14 to begin the second period.

The Maroon squad would get the only score of the period in the final minute of the half as Boehm took a pitch and went 46 yards for six more points. He added two more on the conversion to pull his team within two points at the half.

The offensive onslaught continued in the third quarter with both teams scoring on each of their two possessions.

The Maroon team scored on the first play of the second half as Phillips hit Boehm for a 70-yard touchdown on a halfback pass, and Boehm later capped a seven-play, 70-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge set up by a 35-yard catch by Phillips and a 27-yard run by Josh Dunwoody.

Montgomery had a 38-yard TD run on the third play of the quarter for the White team and ended the quarter by throwing a 70-yard strike to Marquie Davis on a halfback pass to put his team up 40-34 entering the fourth quarter.

Maroon briefly took a 42-40 lead as Boehm found Phillips for another 35-yard catch, this one for a score, but White had the answer as Marquie Davis found a seam down the sideline and raced 68 yards to pay dirt on a third-and-23 call.

Maroon had one last shot to tie or win the game with just over three minutes remaining, using runs by Phillips and Boehm to move the ball to the White 38-yard line, but Jay Bell threw Dunwoody for a 5-yard loss, then sacked Boehm moments later on the final play of the evening for the Maroon.

"The main goals of today were see what we have coming back and to get better for next year," Peppers added. "We had 44 starters today, and when you have that you can get everybody in the game and get some work. We have 23 kids that will have been out here through sixth, seventh, and eighth grade, which is the most we've ever had stay out that long."

Marquie Davis had 172 yards rushing and two TDs on just six carries. He also had one catch good for 70 yards and another score and added a conversion run. Montgomery rushed four times for 129 yards and a pair of scored while adding a a 70-yard TD pass.

Phillips paced the Maroon squad with 164 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. He added 70 yards and another score on two receptions and was 1-of-2 passing for another 70 yards and a score. Boehm carried seven times for 91 yards, was 4-of-7 in the air for 94 yards and two TDs, and caught one scoring pass for 70 yards. Hodges also added a sack on defense.
