Shorter University senior outfielder Charlsie Broome has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week league officials announced on Tuesday.

Broome, a graduate of LaFayette High School, led Shorter to four conference wins last Friday and Saturday with a series of excellent performances as the Lady Hawks swept both Emmanuel and Southern Wesleyan. The conference honor is Broome's first of the season.

Broome finished the week going 9-for-14 at the plate over the four-game stretch while hitting two doubles, a triple, and three home runs with eight RBI's.

Broome led Shorter to a sweep of Emmanuel by going 4-for-7 in the doubleheader on Friday with a double in each game and a triple in the opener. Broome wrapped up the week with five hits in Shorter's sweep of Southern Wesleyan, a series during which she hit three homers to tie teammate Jackie Castaneda for the SSAC lead with 11 home runs on the year. Broome hit two homers and drove in four of Shorter's five runs in Shorter's 5-0 win in Game 2 against SWU.

For the season, Broome is hitting a career-high .416, ranks second in the SSAC in slugging percentage (.708), leads the league in runs scored (49), ranks second in hits (64), and is No. 1 in the SSAC with 23 stolen bases.

Broome and the 10th-ranked Lady Hawks (38-7, 18-3 SSAC) travel to Cleveland, Tenn., tomorrow, Wednesday, April 18, for a doubleheader with SSAC East Division co-leader and 12th-ranked Lee University (41-7, 18-3).

Shorter and Lee split in their doubleheader in Rome earlier in the season and should one team sweep, that team would be in sole possession of first place in the division with four league games remaining
